This last fact is key to the several Southern Bartlett families. The FTDNA project also documents two individuals descended from Joseph Bartlett of Virginia (c1765-c1836) and other Southern Bartlett lines falling under BY166945. This proves where these Southern lines must descend from Benjamin2 Bartlett. As we have more patrilineal descendants of Benjamin Bartlett Big Y tested, we may be able to further refine the lineages of these Southern Bartlett families.

Biography

For more information see: Wakefield, Robert S., Robert Bartlett of the "Anne" and his Descendants of Four Generations

First Generation

[1] Robert Bartlett[1] was born about 1602.[2] His first known record is his emigration to New Plimouth Colony in 1623 aboard the Anne. Robert married about 1630 to Mary Warren, who also came to New Plimouth Colony aboard the Anne. They continued to live in Plymouth, where Robert wrote his will 19 Sep 1676, which was probated 29 Oct 1676. His wife, Mary, survived him, and her last known record was in 1677. A 1683 record by her sons called her then deceased.

Robert and Mary had eight children (Plymouth): Mary (c1631), Benjamin (1633), Rebecca (1634), Sarah (1636), Elizabeth (1636), Joseph (c1639), Lydia (1648) and Mercy (1650).

Second Generation

[2] Benjamin Bartlett was born Plymouth before Jun 1633[3] and died Duxbury between 21- 28 Aug 1691.[4] He married three times, first Susanna Jenney who died (without issue) bef 8 Apr 1654.[5] He married second prob. bef 8 Aug 1655,[6] Sarah Brewster, daughter of Love Brewster and granddaughter of (Elder) William Brewster. Sarah was living as late as 5 Mar 1667/8[7] but Benjamin married third, bef 21 Jan 1678/9[8] to Cecilia _____ (she survived her husband). While various sources state Robert was probably baptized at Puddletown, Dorset, England 27 May 1603, the Society of the Descendants of Robert Bartlett of Plymouth, Massachusetts biography for Robert stated "DNA research does not substantiate this conclusion at this time." However, this compiler does not see any English Bartletts in the project to support this claim.

Previous Y-DNA testing

As of 8 Mar 2023, the Bartlett DNA Project Subgroup: "RF Plymouth, MA & TN" has 29 individuals, all who are close STR matches with each other and 10 of the members state their Most Distant Known Patrilineal (all male line) Ancestor (MDKPA) was Richard Bartlett. FTDNA predicts they fall under R1b-M269 based on their STR results.

NGS/WGS testing

Due to the fact the individual claiming to be descended from Benjamin2 Bartlett cannot currently prove his descent, the information below is still speculative. As such, the Bartlett DNA Project is actively recruiting a proven Y-DNA descendant of Benjamin Bartlett to Big Y test to confirm or refute these findings.

Three individuals claiming descent from Robert Bartlett have taken a Big Y test which documents the haplogroup for Robert Bartlett himself was P312>>U152>Z56>BY3548>Z43>Z145>BY1823>BY28794>PF6582>PF6577>BY3953>BY109876. Two testers (both descended from Joseph2)[1] fall under a subclade of BY109876>BY142576 while the other individual (who claims descent from Benjamin2) falling under a different subclade of BY109876>BY166945. This does not automatically mean that Joseph himself had the BY142576 mutation, rather it means everyone who has this mutation must be a descendant of Joseph. In a similar vein, it does not automatically mean Benjamin himself had the BY166945 mutation, rather it means everyone who has this mutation must be a descendant of Benjamin.

There are several individuals who have not been able to trace their "paper trail" back to Robert Bartlett, but whose Y-DNA results indicate where they do in fact descend in a Y-DNA line from Robert. These individuals are not currently listed on the below chart, but efforts will continue on attempting to place them.

Lines of Y-DNA tested individuals

The following diagram lists those Y-DNA descendants of Robert Barlett who have done Y-DNA testing. Those individuals in Bold text have taken a NGS/WGS test (like the Big Y or Y-Elite) and those individuals in Italic text are individual's whose DNA results show they are not a Y-DNA descendant of Robert Bartlett. The other individuals have taken either Y-STR and/or Y-SNP testing, but have not taken any NGS/WGS test.
