First Generation

[1] Edward Doty[1] was born probably not long before 1599.[2][3]. He was called "of London" in the 1622 Mourts Relation[4] He married twice, with his first marriage occurring sometime after the 1627 Cattle Division. She died shortly afterwards,[5] apparently without any surviving children. Edward married second (his surname given as Doten) at Plymouth, 6 Jan 1634/5 Faith Clarke.[6]. Edward died at Plymouth 23 Aug 1655.[7] Edward and Faith had nine children; three daughters and six sons (Edward, John, Thomas, Samuel, Isaac & Joseph).

Second Generation

[2] Edward Doty (II) was born about 1637 (eldest son in father's will) and died Plymouth 8 Feb 1690. He married Plymouth 26 Feb 1662/3 Sarah Faunce.[8] and they had eleven children; seven daughters and four sons Edward (1664 died unmarried), John (1668 died unmarried), Samuel (1681), and Benjamin (1689).

[3] John Doty was born about 1642. He married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth Cooke (first child born Plymouth 24 Aug 1668[9]). He married second, Plymouth 22 Nov 1694 to Sarah Jones.[10] John Doty and first wife Elizabeth Cooke had nine children (surnamed Doten); two daughters and seven sons John (1668), Edward (1671 never marr.), Jacob (1673 never marr.), Isaac (1678), Samuel (1682), Elisha (1686) and Josiah (1689). John Doty and second wife Sarah Jones had three daughters (surnamed Doten).

[4] Thomas Doty[11] was born about 1640. He married[12] Mary Churchill bef 1675 (he had an illegitimate daughter by her in 1672) They had two more children: Hannah and Thomas.

[5] Samuel Doty was born in 1643. He married at Piscataway, NJ 13 Nov 1678 to Jane Harmon. Samuel died between 18 Sep - 9 Nov 1715 at Piscataway, NJ. Samuel Doty and Jane Harmon had thirteen children; three daughters and ten sons Samuel (1679), Isaac (1683), Edward (1685), James (1686), John[13] , Jonathan (1687), Benjamin (1691), Joseph (1699), Daniel (1701/2) and Nathaniel (c1707).

[6] Isaac Doty was born 8 Feb 1647/8.[14] He married by 1673 Elizabeth Wood. He died in 1678 at Oyster Bay, Long Island (New York). Isaac Doty and Elizabeth England had six sons: Isaac (c1673), Joseph (c1679), Jacob (1683), Solomon (c1686), Samuel (c1689) and James (1693)

[7] Joseph Doty was born 30 Apr 1651.[15] He married in the summer of 1674 to Deborah Ellis.[16] Joseph was accused of being the father of Theophilus Doty (1673/4) by Elizabeth Warren (daughter of Nathaniel Warren).[17] Joseph Doty and Deborah Ellis had eight children; five daughters and three sons: Ellis (1677), Joseph (1683) and John (1688).

Third Generation

[8] (Capt.) Samuel Doty was born Plymouth 17 May 1681 and died Saybrook (now Old Saybrook), CT 26 Jan 1750. He married Saybrook 3 Dec 1706 Anne Buckingham and they had two children (Saybrook): Sarah (1708) and [9] Samuel (1712 m Margeria Parker).

[10] Benjamin Doty was born Plymouth 30 May 1689 and died Saybrook (now Old Saybrook), CT 25 Jun 1770. He married Saybrook 12 Oct 1716 Hester Beamont and they had ten children (Saybrook): Hester (1717), Anne (1720), [11] William (1723-1742 unm.), [12] Edward (1726 m Anna ____), Sarah (c1726), Martha (c1733), Temperance (c1737), Mercy (c1738) and [13] Benjamin (1742 m Phebe Kirkland).


[14] John Doten was born Plymouth 24 Aug 1668 and died there in 1747. He married twice, first Plymouth 2 Feb 1692/3 Mehitable Nelson then Plympton 25 Apr 1745 Mercy Sherman (no children). By his first wife he had seven children (Plymouth): Mehitable (1694), [15] Edward (1697 d.y.), [16] John (1700 m Lydia Dunham), [17] Jacob (1703 m Deborah Rickard), Sarah (1707), Susannah (1710) and Lydia (1713).

[18] Isaac Doten was born Plymouth 25 Oct 1678 and died there 15 Apr 1725. He married Plymouth 17 Mar 1702/3 Martha Faunce and they had nine children (Plymouth): Elizabeth (1704), Jane (1706), [19] Isaac (1709 m Mary Lanman), Rebecca (1711), [20] Neriah (son 1713 never marr.), [21] Jabez (1716 m Lydia Burling & Rachel Jeffrey), Hope (1718), [22] Ichabod (1720/1 prob. never married) and Mary[18] (1720/1).

[23] Samuel Doten was born Plymouth 31 Jan 1682 and died there 20 May 1740. He married Plymouth 10 Apr 1727 Marcy Cobb and they had five children (Plymouth): [24] Samuel (1729 m Mary Cooke), infant (1731/2), Mercy (1732/3), Hannah (1734) and Sarah (1736).

[25] Elisha Doten was born Plymouth 13 Jul 1686 and died there after 24 Dec 1753. He married Marblehead 1 Feb 1708 Hannah Horton and they had six children (Plymouth): [26] Elisha (1709 m Deborah Tubbs), [27] Samuel (1712 m Joanna Bosworth), [28] Edward (1716 m Phebe Finney), Paul (1721 m Ruth Faunce), Lois (1724), [29] Stephen (1726 m Hannah Bartlett) and [30] James (1728 m Ruth Finney & Bathsheba Delano).

[31] [32] Josiah Doten] was born Plymouth in Oct 1689 and died there 15 Jan 1767. He married Plymouth about 1714 Abigail ___ and they had five children (Plymouth): [33] Josiah (1715 m Deborah Rider), Abigail (1716), Experience (dau. 1718/9), Patience (1721) and Sarah (1723).


[34] Thomas Doty/Doten (II) was born Plymouth 22 Jul 1679 and died Banstable Co., MA before 13 Jun 1721. He married twice, first Plymouth 24 Feb 1702/3 Elizabeth Harlow then Sandwich 18 Apr 1705 Mercy Ellis (no ch.) He had one child by his first wife (Plymouth): [35] Thomas (1704 m Elizabeth Cooke, Ruth Barnaby[19] & Abigail Johnson).


[36] Samuel Doty Jr. was born Piscataway, East Jersey (now New Jersey) 27 Aug 1679 and died there in 1750. He married Piscataway 19 Se 1700 Elizabeth Hull and they had nine children (Piscataway): [37] Samuel (1700 m Abigail Sringer), [38] Moses (1702 m Elizabeth Bloom), Joanna (1704), Daniel (1707 m ___) [39] John (1709 m Mary ___ & Ocie Skillman), [40] Thomas (1714, no further record), Johannah (1717 d.y.), Johannah (1718), [41] Ebenezer (1720 no further record) and Mary 1723.

John Doty[20] was born Piscataway, East Jersey (now New Jersey) 2 Mar 1680/1 and died Basking Ridge, NJ abt 1766. He married twice, first 1711 Mary Duane then Pyatte Pratt (no children). By his first wife he had five children: Isaac (1712 m Mary Reyno), Mary (1713), James (1715), Azariah (m Hannah ___) and Sarah Elizabeth (1735).

[42] Isaac Doty was born was born Piscataway, East Jersey (now New Jersey) 12 Aug 1683 and died there after 1749. He married about 1716 Frances ___ and they had seven children (Piscataway): [43] Isaac (1717), Elizabeth (1719 d.y.), [44] Samuel (1722), Elizabeth (1725), [45] Micajah (1728 m Rosanna ___), [46] John (1731) and Joan (1733).

[47] Edward Doty was born Piscataway, East Jersey (now New Jersey) 14 May 1685 and died there 17 Oct 1717. He married about 1711 Sarah Davis and they had: [48] John (1712 m Mary Schermerhorn), [49] Jeremiah (c1714 m Hermtje Covert) and Sarah (1717).

[50] James Doty was born Piscataway, East Jersey (now New Jersey) 17 Sep 1686 and died there 23 Sep 1739. He married Piscataway 16 Sep 1712 Phebe Sater and they had: Mary (1713), Elizabeth (1714), Esther (1716), [51] Edward (1718 m Hannah ___), [52] James (1719), [53] Benjamin (1721 m Lydia Munden) and [54] Benajah (1723 m Elizabeth Chatwin & Elizabeth Farr).

[55] Jonathan Doty was born Piscataway, East Jersey (now New Jersey) 24 Feb 1687/8 and died Basking Ridge, NJ. He married about 1717 Mary ___ and they had [56] William (1719), Jane (1722), [57] Jonathan (1724 m Patience Sutton), [58] Daniel (c1727), [59] Joshua (c1730), Mary (1733), [60] Joseph (c1735 m Grace Colyer) and Elizabeth (c1740).

[61] Joseph Doty was born Piscataway, East Jersey (now New Jersey) 30 Oct 1696 and died New Providence, NJ 16 Sep 1768. He married Flushing, NY 1721 Sarah Badgley and they had six children: [62] Joseph (1722 d.y.), [63] George (1723 m Sybil Howell), [64] John (1725 m Sarah Potter & Sarah Clark), Elizabeth (1728), [65] Anthony (c1730 m ___ Parsons) and Sarah (c1735).

[66] Daniel Doty[21] was born Pisncataway, East Jersey (now New Jersey) 9 Mar 1701 and died Fairfield Co., SC 1785. He married Piscataway 1728 Louisa A. Daniel and they had John (1737 m Hannah Husted) and David (1742 m Rachel Pickett).

[67] Nathaniel Doty was born Piscataway, NJ about 1707 and died Menham, NJ 18 Mar 1776. He married twice, first _____, then abt 1755 Patience Sutton. [70] Isaac Doty Jr. was born Oyster Bay, NY abt 1673 and died Long Island City, NY about 1729. He married Oyster Bay about 1700 Elizabeth ___ and they had two children: [71] Isaac (1697 m Hannah Seaman & Sarah Titus) and Mary (1710).

[72] Joseph Doty was born Oyster Bay, NY 1680 and died there in 1716. He married about 1705 Sarah Carpenter and they had four children: Sarah (c1704), Joseph (c1708 unk if marr.) [73] Isaac (1710 believed to have died young) and Elizabeth (1716/7).

[74] Jacob Doty was born Oyster Bay, NY 1682 and died Nassau, NY 17 Oct 1753. He married twice, first Oyster Bay 1713 Penelope Albertson then Charity MUDGE Doty (no children). He married Rachel Seaman and they had: Isaac (1723), Stephen (1725 no further record), Temperance (1726), Moses (1731 m Anne Disisway/Disosway), Samuel (1740 no further record), Seamans (1749 m Sarah Gallaudet), Elizabeth and Mary.

[80] James Doughty was born Oyster Bay, NY 21 Dec 1693 and died there 4 Feb 1773. He married Catherine Latting and they had: [81] John (1731 m Lucy Smith), Sarah (1733), [82] James (1736 unm.), Mary (1738), [83] Zebulon (1738 m Hepsibeth Hendrickson & Esther Henderson) and [84] Thomas (1745 m Deborah Feke).

[85] Samuel Doty was born Oyster Bay, NY 1695 and died there 6 May 1740. He married about 1715 Charity Mudge and they had Phebe (1716), Charity (1718), Elizabeth (1720), Deborah (1723), [86] Isaac (1726), [87] Stephen (1728), [88] Charles (1730 m Sarah Baker & Elizabeth Titus) and [89] Elias (1732 m Hannah Palmer & Amy Dean).


[90] Theophilus Doty (illegitimate child Joseph Doty and Elizabeth Warren) was born Sandwich 22 Feb 1673/4 and died Rochester about 18 Jan 1745. He married Ruth Mendall and they had: [91] Ebenezer (1697 likely never marr.), Ruth (1698/9), Deborah (1702), Lydia (1704), Elizabeth (1706), [92] Caleb (1709 likely never married) and Phebe (1711).

[93] Ellis Doty was born Sandwich 16 Apr 1677 and died Rochester after 1728. He married about 1706 Eleanor ___ and they had: [94] Edward (1705 m Mary Andrews), [95] Barnabas (1707 m Sarah Turner), [96] John (1709 likely never marr.), [97] Joseph (1712 likely never married), Eleanor (1715) and [98] Elijah (1718 m Susannah Allen & Susannah Ferris).

[99] Joseph Doty was born Rochester 31 Mar 1683 and died Sharon, CT in 1748. He married Rochester 2 Jul 1708 Hannah Edwards and they had: Sarah (1709), [100] Isaac (1711 m Elizabeth Blackmer), [101] Ellis (1712/3 m Alice Whiton), Deborah (1715), Elizabeth (1717), [102] Silas (1722 m Susanna Bumpas), [103] Joseph (1723 m Elizabeth Landers & Phebe Bumpus), Faith (1725), Deborah (1727) and [104] Timothy (1730 m Mercy Meigs).

[105] John Doty was born 1 Mar 1688 and died Sharon, CT about 1749. He married Rochester 1713 Elizabeth ___ and they had: [106] Samuel (1714 m Zeruiah Lovell & Elizabeth Southard) and [107] Simeon (1727 m ___).


  1. Pilgrim Hall Museum Edward Dotey biography.
  2. He signed the Mayflower Compact of Dec 1620, so was then at least 21 years old, but he was also fathering children in the 1650's. As he was a servant to Stephen Hopkins aboard the Mayflower he was most likely then under 25 years of age.
  3. Gustav Anjou claimed Edward was the son of John Doughty and Ann Holland born 14 May 1598. However, Anjou was well known for fabricating information and it is clear from reputable sources where this was simply one of his many fabrications. (TAG 63:215)
  4. This may simply mean he was not a member of the Leiden Congregation, but rather was recruited from the London area by the Merchant Adventurers.
  5. Roser's Mayflower Passenger Reference states she may have died in the 1633 infection of the Colony.

Previous Y-DNA testing

Previous Y-DNA testing through the Mayflower Society DNA Project and the Doty/Doughty surname DNA project has documented where the Mayflower Doty lineage belongs to the R1b-L21 Y-DNA haplogroup, which is quite common in Northwestern Europe, particularly the British Isles.

NGS/WGS testing

NGS testing has been able to refine the haplogroup to: R-L21>DF13>ZZ10_1>Z16423>Z255>L159.2>Z16429>Z16433>A1248>A1245>A1254>FT78842[1][2].
