Status summary
Completed as of October 22, 2020:
- Recruiting additional direct male-line Southworth descendants for NGS/WGS SNP testing - anyone interested in submitting their DNA for testing should contact MayflowerDNA1620@gmail.com
Still to do as of October 22, 2020
- NGS/WGS test multiple Southworth descendants to firmly place family clade as well as discover any subclades unique to descendants lines
Biography
In his 1905 Southworth Genealogy,[1] Samuel Webber claimed Edward Southworth was likely the son of Thomas Southworth of Samlesbury, Lancashire, England, who married Rosamond Lister. This ancestry has been disproven by Sue Allan in her 2019 book: In Search of Separatist Edward Southworth of Leiden, New England Historic Genealogical Society
First Generation
Edward Southworth is now believed to be the Edward baptized at Clareborough, Nottinghamshire, England 12 Apr 1585, son of Richard Southworth & Imogene Aston (married in 1569). Edward died sometime shortly before the sailing of the Mayflower in 1620. He married Leiden, Holland 28 May 1613 Alice Carpenter. After Edward's death, Alice emigrated to the New Plimouth colony where she married (Gov.) William Bradford. Edward and Alice had at least two sons both who lived in Plymouth Colony: Constant & Thomas
Second Generation
Constant Southworth (Esq.) is said to have been born about 1612 and died in Duxbury 11 Mar 1678/9. He married at Plymouth 2 Nov 1637 Elizabeth Collier. They had eight children (born Duxbury): Mercy (1640), Priscilla (c1642), Edward (c1644), Alice (c1646), Nathaniel (c1649), Mary (c1654), William (c1659) and Elizabeth (c1661)
Thomas Southworth is said to have been born about 1617 and died at Plymouth 8 Dec 1669 in his 53rd year.[2] He married Plymouth 1 Sep 1641 Elizabeth Reynor.[3] They only had one daughter, Elizabeth (c1644).
Third Generation
Edward Southworth married Duxbury 16 Nov 1671 Mary Pabodie. They had eight children: Elizabeth (1672 dy), Mercy (c1675), Thomas (c1676 m Sarah Alden, daughter of Jonathan Alden), Benjamin (c1681 m Abigail West & Rebecca Delano, daughter of Samuel Delano), Constant (c1683 m Abigail West & Rebecca Simmons daughter of John Simmons), John (c1687-1751 prob. unm.), Elizabeth (c1690) and Priscilla (c1692).
Nathaniel Southworth married Plymouth 10 Jan 1672 Desire Gray. They had six children: Hannah (c1672), Constant (son 1674 unm.), Mary (1676), Ichabod (1678 m Esther Hodges), Nathaniel (1684 see below) and Edward (1688 m Bridget Bosworth).
(Capt.) William Southworth married twice, first to Rebecca Pabodie (died 25 Dec 1702). They had nine children: Benjamin (1681 m. Elizabeth Woodworth, Mary Church & Susanna Palmer), Joseph (1682/3 m. Mary Blague), Edward (1684 m Mary Fobes & Elizabeth Palmer), Elizabeth (1686), Alice (1688), Samuel (1690 m Abigail ___), Nathaniel (1692 m Mary Torrey), Thomas (1694 m Patience Thurston, only 1 dau.), and Stephen (1696 m. Lydia Worden). William then married Nov 1705 Martha (Kirkland) Blague and they had two sons: Gideon (1707) and Andrew (1709).
Fourth Generation
Nathaniel Southworth (II) was born Plymouth 18 May 1684 and died Middleborough 8 Apr 1757. He married probably Middleborough about 1709 Jael Howland and they had six children (Middleborough): Fear (1709/10), Ichabod (1711-1727), Hannah (1714), Gideon (1718), Samuel (1721/2) and Nathaniel (1728/9).
Fifth Gemeratopm
Gideon Southworth was born Middleborough 5 Sep 1718 and died there 25 Oct 1788. He married Middleborough 24 Dec 1741 Rebecca Ellis and they had seven children (Middleborough): Jael (1742), Elizabeth (1744/5), Rebecca (1746), Gideon (1750 m Mary Haskell & Deborah DONHAM Thomas), Hannah (1756), Nathaniel (1759 m Hannah Haskell) and Mary (1763).
Samuel Southworth was born Middleborough 18 Jan 1721/2 and died before 25 Dec 1755. He married Middleborough 2 Jan 1745[/6?] Elizabeth Caswell and they had three children (Middleborough): Hannah (1746), Lucia (1748) and Samuel (1750).
Nathaniel Southworth (III) was born Middleborough 26 Jan 1728/9 and died there 31 Jul 1762. He married Middleborough 16 Feb 1748 Susanna Smith and they had five children (Middleborough): Mary "Molly" (1749-1752), Susanna (1755-1758), Nathaniel (1760-1761), Bathsheba (1761-1767) and Hannah.

Previous Y-DNA testing
According to the Southworth-Southard surname DNA Project Subgroup SF02 (Southworths from Samlesbury) includes not only Y-DNA descendants of Constant Southworth, but other Southworth, Sudduth, Southard and even a Davis family. Everyone in this grouping are close STR marker matches so it is possible they share a common patrilineal ancestry in England.
NGS/WGS testing
WHile none of the claimed descendants of Constant Southworth have ordered a Big Y test, several members of this Project subgroup have Big Y tested and been found to fall under various subclades of R-P312>>L21>DF13>Z39589>S1051>S1050>FGC17980>FGC17990>S1057>FGC17983>FGC46958>FT260574
Further needed testing
We need patrilineal (all male-line) descendants of the Southworth family to WGS/NGS test to confirm their placement and refine the haplogroup further and delineate descendant clades.
