Biography

For more information see Jacobus, Donald Lines, The Waterman Family[.] Vol. II Descendants of Robert Waterman, privately pub., New Haven, CT, 1942.

First Generation

Robert Waterman was born England about 1608 and died Marshfield 10 Dec 1652. He married Plymouth 11 Dec 1638 Elizabeth Bourne and they had four children (Marshfield): John (1642), Thomas (1644), Joseph (c1649) and Robert (c1652).

Second Generation

John Waterman was born Marshfield 19 Apr 1642 and died Plympton 14 Sep 1718. He married Plymouth 7 Dec 1665 Anna Sturtevant and (among other children) they had: Samuel (1666).

Joseph Waterman was born Marshfield abt 1649 and died there 3 Jan 1710/1 aged 62 yrs. He married abt 1673 Sarah Snow[1] and they had seven children (born Marshfield): Sarah (1674), Joseph (1676), Elizabeth (1679), Abigail (1681), Anthony (1684), Bethiah (1687) and Lydia (1689).

Third Generation

Samuel Waterman was born Marshfield 16 Oct 1666 and died Plymouth 10 Mar 1718. He married twice, his second wife (married ca 1701) was Bethia ____ by who he had (among others): Samuel (1703).

Joseph Waterman (II) was born Marshfield 2 or 20 Jan 1676 and died there 28 Nov 1715. He married Marshfield 16 Jun 1709 Lusanna Snow (who is also a Richard Warren descendant) and they had three children: Abigail (1710), Joseph (1712-1715) and Abiah (dau. 1714). Therefor, no surviving patrilineal/Y-DNA descendants from this Joseph.

Anthony Waterman was born Marshfield 4 Jun 1684 and died there 3 Apr 1715. He married abt 1709 Elizabeth Arnold[2] and they had four children: Thomas (1710), Joseph (1711/2), Zebulon (1713) and Orphan (dau 1715).

Fourth Generation

Samuel Waterman (II) was born Plymouth 23 Sep 1703 and died Amenia, NY abt 11 Oct 1761. He married Plympton 23 Aug 1722 Mary Doty and they had six children: infant son (c1724-c1724), Samuel (1726), Sonora (1728), Mary (1730), Bethia (1733) and Asa (1736).

  1. There is no contemporary record proving this marriage, but it was accepted by D.L. Jacobus in his Waterman Genealogy (I:28) as well as by George Bowman in Mayflower Descendant 24:145.
  2. After Anthony's death, Elizabeth married Jonathan Alden (II).

Previous Y-DNA testing

The Waterman Y-DNA Project Group: To sort (a) - Waterman has one individual claiming Robert Waterman (father of Joseph) as their Most Distant Known Paternal Ancestor (MDKPA). He has Y-SNP tested down to R1b-U106>>Z381>>L48. He has also tested 67 Y-STRs. Plugging in his STR values into the NevGen Haplogroup Prediction tool does not help in predicting a haplogroup/clade.

Further needed testing

We need additional direct male-line descendants of Robert Waterman (and preferably of his son Joseph) to WGS/NGS test to confirm the haplogroup/clade for the family as well as possibly identify subclade branches of descendant lines.
