Completed as of October 1, 2020:

  • Recruiting additional direct male-line Francis West descendants for further SNP testing - anyone interested in submitting their DNA for testing should contact MayflowerDNA1620@gmail.com
  • Y-SNP predicted to fall under R1b-U106

Still to do as of October 1, 2020

  • NGS/WGS test multiple descendants of Francis West to firmly place family clade as well as test descendants to discover any subclades unique to descendants lines

Biography

First Generation

Francis West was born about 1633, presumably in England[1] and died North Kingstown, RI aft 6 Sep 1687. The date and circumstances of his emigration to New England is currently unknown. Francis married Plymouth abt 1661 Susanna Soule and they had nine children: Francis (c1662), Richard (c1664), Peter (c1666), John (c1669), Susannah (1673), Martha (c1677), William (1681), Thomas (twin, 1684) and Clement (twin, 1684).

Francis West (II) was born Plymouth abt 1662 and died North Kingstown, RI abt 1724. He married abt 1698 Sarah Downing and they had seven children (Kingston, now South Kingstown, RI): Susanna (c1699), Sarah (1700), Peter (c1702), John (c1704), Francis (c1706), Thomas (c1708) and Mary (1711).

Richard West was born Plymouth abt 1664 and died Middleborough abt 1726. He married twice, first Plymouth 26 Oct 1693 Mary Samson and second Plymouth 21 Oct 1706 Elizabeth Cannedy. By his first wife Richard had four children (Taunton): Richard (c1694), Susannah (c1700), Thomas (1702) and Mary (c1704). By his second wife Richard had four more children (Taunton): Elizabeth (c1708), Charles (c1710), Charity (c1713) and Sarah (1715).

William West was born Kingston (now North Kingstown), RI 31 May 1681 and died West Greenwich, RI bef 1751. He married twice, first abt 1707 Abiah Sprague and second abt 1722 Jane Tanner. By his first wife William had five children: Deborah (c1708), William (c1710), John (1715), Abiah (c1718) and infant (c1720). Clement West was born Kingston (now North Kingstown), RI 18 Sep 1684 and died there aft 14 Apr 1747. He married Kingston (now South Kingstown), RI abt 1725 Sarah Tanner and they had nine children: Mary (1726), Richard (1728), Clement (1731/2), Susannah (1733), John (1736), Elizabeth (1738), Thomas (1740), Eliza (1742) and Sarah (1745).

  1. DNA testing West Surname DNA Project has conclusively proven where Francis West (FG 20 husband of Susanna Soule) could not have been son of Francis West and Margery Reeves (FG20). In addition, one descendant of Matthew West b. 1598 has done Y-DNA testing and falls under a completely different haplogroup. Thus it is highly unlikely Francis was a son of Matthew.

DNA results R1b-BY518

Previous Y-DNA testing

The West Surname DNA Project Subgroup: "FG20" lists nine individuals (all STR matching each other), with three stating their Most Distant Known Paternal Ancestor (MDKPA) was Francis West (married Susanna Soule).[1] None of these individuals have done any Y-DNA SNP testing, but two individuals have done 67 Y-STR testing. Plugging in their Y 67 STR values into the Nevgen.org Haplogroup Predictor[2] gives a prediction of R1b-L21>DF13>DF21>S5488>BY518 with a 96.5% probability.

  1. Another Subgroup (FG19) descends from a Francis West, born ca 1606. STR results indicate they are NOT closely related to FG20.
  2. set for R1b haplogroup

Further needed testing

We need additional direct male-line descendants of Francis West to WGS/NGS test to both confirm this prediction as well as to refine the haplogroup further and delineate descendant clades.
