First Generation

Mary Lee, daughter of Robert Lee and Mary Atwood, was born in England abt 1630 and died Barnstable aft 24 Feb 1704/5.[1] She married Plymouth 28 Oct 1651 John Howland (II) and they had ten children: Mary (1652), Elizabeth (1655), Isaac (1659), Hannah (1661), Mercy (1663), Lydia (1665), Experience (1668), Anne (1670), Shobal (1672) and John (1674).

Second Generation

Mary Howland was born Marshfield abt 1652 and died Killingly, CT aft 3 Aug 1711. She married Barnstable late in 1673 John Allyn and they had ten children: John (1674), Mary (1675-1677), Matthew (1677-1680), Isaac (1679), Mercy (1681-1683), Hannah (1683), Thomas (1684), Matthew (1687), Jabez (1688) and Elizabeth (d. 1693).

Elizabeth Howland was born Marshfield 17 May 1655 and died Shrewsbury, NJ aft 30 Jan 1695. She married Barnstable Dec 1673 John Bursley (III) and they had ten children: Elizabeth (1674-1675), Mercy (1675-1676), John (1677), Mary (1679 m Joseph Smith, no ch.), Jabez (1681), Joanna (1684), Joseph (1686), Abigail (1690 m Nathan Bodfish, no children known), Elizabeth (1692 m Jonathan Crocker, only one son) and Temperance (1695 unm.).

Hannah Howland was born Barnstable 15 May 1661 and died there bef 1 Feb 1710/1. She married Barnstable 20 May 1686 Jonathan Crocker and they had eight children (Barnstable): Lydia (1686), Hannah (1688), Thankful (1690 unm.), Isaac (1692), Reliance (1694), Jonathan (1696), James (1699) and Ephraim (1702-1704).

Mercy Howland was born Barnstable 21 Jan 1663 and died Taunton abt 1706. She possibly married Edward Richmond and they had six children: Mercy (1693 m Edward Walker, no ch.), Edward (1695), Josiah (1697), Nathaniel (1700), Elizabeth (1702) and Seth (1704).

Lydia Howland was born Barnstable 9 Jan 1665 and died Middleborough 5 Jul 1717. She married Middleborough 25 Feb 1684/5 Jeremiah Thomas and they had eleven children (Middleborough): Nathaniel (1685), Sarah (1687), Jeremiah (1688), Elizabeth (1690), Mary (1692), Lydia (1694), Thankful (1695), Jedidiah (1698), Bethiah (1701), Ebenezer (1703) and Priscilla (1705 unk. if marr.)[2]

Experience Howland was born Barnstable 28 Jul 1668 and died Halifax aft 16 Oct 1734. She is believed to have married Barnstable abt 1685 James Bearse and they had eight children: Thankful (1685s), Shubael (1687), James (1689), Experience (1692), Priscilla (1694), Mary (1696 m Elisha West, only had three sons), John (1698) and Rebecca (1705).

Anne Howland was born Barnstable 9 Sep 1670 and died there 19 Apr 1750. She married Barnstable 18 Sep 1691 Joseph Crocker and they had three children (Barnstable): Deborah (1691 likely d.y.), Prudence (1692) and Benjamin (1696).

Third Generation

Hannah Allyn was born Middleborough 27 Dec 1683 and died Pomfret, CT 10 Mar 1753. She married Woodstock, CT 17 Apr 1718 James Holmes and they had three children (Pomfret): James (1719), Mary (1720/1) and Joseph (1722/3-1742/3).


Joanna Bursley was born Barnstable 29 Nov 1684 and died aft 17 May 1750 (husband's will). She married Barnstable 10 Mar 1708/9 Nathan Crocker and they had six children (Barnstable): Jabez (1709), Benoni (1711/2), Nathan (1713/4), Isaac (1719), John (1721/2) and Temperance (1724).


Lydia Crocker was born Barnstable 26 Sep 1686 and died there 17 Mar 1780. She married Barnstable 10 Nov 1709 Benjamin Bodfish and they had nine children ([West] Barnstable): Sylvanus (1710), Hannah (1712), Thankful (1714), Solomon (1716), Joseph (1718), Benjamin (1720 d.y.), Lydia (bp 1723 d.y.), Rachel (bp 1725/6 d.y.) and Jonathan (1727).

Hannah Crocker was born Barnstable 26 Mar 1688 and died East Haddam, CT 31 Mar 1751. She married Barnstable 7 Dec 1708 Shubael Fuller and they had nine children (East Haddam): Lydia (1709), Ephraim (1711), Thankful (1713), Zerviah (1716), Hannah (1718), Shubael (1720/1), Jonathan (1724-1726), Rachel (1727) and Leah (bp 1731 d.y.)

Reliance Crocker was born Barnstable 28 Jun 1694 and died there 4 May 1724. She married Barnstable 5 Oct 1713 (as his first wife) Joseph Smith and they had six children ([West] Barnstable): Lydia (1714), Abigail (1716), Joseph (1718), Ephraim (1722), Ann (1722) and Manasseth (1723/4).


Elizabeth Richmond was born 1702. She married twice, first Nathaniel Hathaway and second, John Wadsworth. By her first husband, she had one child: Lydia (1721-1722).


Sarah Thomas was born Middleborough 25 Dec 1687 and died there 39 Apr 1756. She married twice, first before 1714 Isaac Howland (II) and second, Middleborough 7 Aug 1730 (as his second wife) Samuel Wood (no ch.) By her first husband she had four children (Middleborough): Isaac (1714), Jeremiah (1715), Joseph (1717) and Charles (1722-1723).

Elizabeth Thomas was born Middleborough 19 Nov 1690 and died probably Halifax in Aug 1776. She married Middleborough 24 Oct 1723 John Tomson and they had three children (Plympton): John (1724/5), Elizabeth (1726) and Lydia (1730).

Mary Thomas was born Middleborough 5 Jun 1692 and died probably Barnstable after 1756 (will of husband). She married twice, first Barnstable 25 Oct 1733 (as his second wife) Reuben Blish and second, Barnstable 5 Mar 1744 (as his second wife) John Annable. No children by either husband.

Lydia Thomas was born Middleborough 26 Mar 1694 and died aft Mar 1756.[3] She married twice, first Middleborough 13 Jan 1723/4 George Thomas and second, Middleborough 26 Aug 1736 (as his second wife) Jonathan Cobb (no children). By her first husband Lydia had three children (Middleborough): Sarah (1725), Gideon (1726/7) and Lydia (1730).

Thankful Thomas was born Middleborough 39 Jun 1695 and died there 17 Apr 1743. She married Middleborough 6 Mar 1717/8 James Cobb and they had nine children (Middleborough): Lydia (1718), Rachel (1719), Thankful (1722), Patience (c1724), James (1726/7), Sarah (1729), Priscilla (1730/1) and Elizabeth (1734-1814 unm.)

Bethiah Thomas was born Middleborough 27 Mar 1701 and died aft Nov 1741 (husband's will probated). She married (as his second wife) Barnstable (int. 27 Jul 1725) Jacob Chipman and they had nine children (Halifax): Lucretia (1727), Lydia (1728), Anna (1730), Bethiah (1732), Jacob (twin, 1733), Priscilla (twin, 1733), Hannah (1735), Mary (twin, 1738) and infant twin daughter (1738-1738).


Thankful Bearse was born Barnstable about 1685 and died Plymouth 29 May 1728. She married Plympton 19 Dec 1718 Elisha Curtis and they had two children: Thankful Bearse (1719), and Experience (1723).

Experience Bearse was born Barnstable about 1692 and died in 1735. She married 12 Mar 1718/9 Dennis Egerton and they had eight children (Halifax): Hannah (1719), John (1721), Rebecca (1723), Experience (1725), James (1727), Hezekiah (1729), Miriam (1731) and Dennis (1733).

Priscilla Bearse was born Barnstable about 1694 and died Pembroke 29 May 1728. She married Plympton 12 Feb 1718 Josiah Bourn and they had at least three children (Pembroke)Cite error: Closing </ref> missing for <ref> tagIt is currently unknown whether they had any children.


Priscilla Bourn was born Pembroke 22 Nov 1721 and died (East) Bridgewater 6 Jan 1813. She married Pembroke 24 Feb 1757 Jonathan Perkins and they had at least one child: Bourn(e) (1758-1778).

Elizabeth Bourn was born Pembroke 22 Jul 1723. She married Pembroke 5 May 1757 Joseph Stetson (II). It is currently unknown whether they had any children.


Lydia Chard was born abt 1729 and may have been the Lydia Lyon who died Whately 21 Aug 1789 aged 60. She poss. married Wilton 25 Jan 1776 Peletiah Lyon. If this is correct, then she had no children.

Experience Chard was born abt 1736. She married Wilton 14 Jun 1754 Thaddeus Nichols and they had eleven children: Nehemiah (1756), Susannah (1756), Lydia (1757), Enos (1759), Betty (1761), Thaddeus (1762), Esther (1764), Eunice (1766), Eliakim (1772), Hannah (1774) and Elias (1776).

Mary Chard was born abt 1738 and is said to have died in 1824. She married 21 Oct 1751 Wilton Jonathan Nichols and they had at least two children: James (c1752) and Jonathan (c1754).

Abiah Chard was born abt 1740. She married twice, first abt 1765 John Fuller and second Weston 26 Sep 1787 Francis Newall. It is currently unknown whether she had any children.

Rebecca Chard was baptized Wilton, CT 15 May 1742 and died there 30 May 1804. She married Wilton 21 Oct 1759 Jachim Gregory. It is currently unknown whether they had any children.


  1. Signed off her dower rights to a deed of her husband. Original deed in possession of the Pilgrim John Howland Society.
  2. She was NOT the wife of John Watson.
  3. Her dower rights mentioned in deed of son Gideon.

DNA results TBD

To date, we know of no matrilineal (all female line) descendants of Mary LEE Howland, who has taken a mtDNA test (and publicly posted their results). Anyone who believes they are a matrilineal descendant (ie mother's mother's mother's etc.) is encouraged to contact MayflowerDNA1620@gmail.com.
