Biography

[1] Katherine Whelden was the second child and daughter of Gabriel Whelden[1], baptized at St. Leodegarius Church, Basford, Nottinghamshire England 6 Mar 1616/7.[2] She married at Plymouth 9 Oct 1639 Giles Hopkins.[3] She was last mentioned as living in the codicil to her husband's will, dated Eastham 5 Mar 1688/9.[4] Katherine and Giles had ten children[5]; five sons and five daughters (Mary, Abigail, Deborah, Ruth [not known to have married] and Elizabeth [died young])

Second Generation

[2] Mary Hopkins was born at Yarmouth in Nov 1640 and died at Eastham 2 Jul 1700. She married at Eastham 3 Jan 1665/6 Samuel Smith. They had seven children (all born Eastham): Infant son (1667-1667), Samuel (1668), Mary (1669/70), Joseph (1671), John (1673), Grace [1676-1691, never married] and Deborah[6] [1678])

[3] Abigail Hopkins was born at Yarmouth in Oct 1644 and likely died at Eastham. She married at Eastham 23 May 1667 William Merrick (II). They had nine children (all born Eastham): Rebecca, William, Benjamin, Nathaniel, John, Joshua, Ruth, Samuel and Stephen

[4] Deborah Hopkins was born at Eastham in Jun 1648 and died (probably at Eastham) 7 Dec 1727. She married at Eastham 27 Jul 1668 Josiah Cooke (II). They had eight children; five sons and three daughters (Elizabeth [d. young], Elizabeth and Deborah)

Third Generation

[5] Mary Smith was born Eastham 3 Jan 1668/9 and died Chatham 5 Aug 1708. She married Chatham about 1693 Daniel Hamilton and they had Grace (1694-1694), Thomas (1695), Lydia (1697), Mary (c1699), Samuel (1701) and Daniel (c1703).


[6] Rebecca Merrick was born Eastham 28 Nov 1668 and died before May 1723. She married Eastham about 1690 Jonathan Sparrow (II) and they had Hannah (c1690), Abigail (c1692), Jonathan (c1695), Joseph (c1697), Rebecca (c1700) and John.

[7] Ruth Merrick was born 1683 and died 1766. She married twice, first Samuel Sears (II) and second Harwich 7 Dec 1731 Chillingsworth Foster. By her first husband (Samuel Sears) Ruth had: Abigail (1711), Mercy (1713), Ruth (1715), Desire (1716/7), Mary (1718), Hannah (1720), Samuel (1721), Isaac (1723-1724/5), Seth (1725).


[8] Elizabeth Cooke was born Eastham 1 Jun 1674 and died there after 7 Dec 1727. She married there Oct 1693 Thomas Newcomb and they had Edward (1695), Thomas (1697), Simon (1699), Deborah (1702), Mary (1704), Josiah (1706), Elizabeth (c1709) and Ebenezer (c1712).

[9] Deborah Cooke was born Eastham 15 Feb 1678 and died Chatham 23 Apr 1743. She married Eastham about 1700 Moses Godfrey and they had: Jonathan (c1701), Samuel (c1703), Moses (c1705), David (c1707), George (c1707), Desire (c1709), Mary (1711), Deborah (c1715), Elizabeth (1718), Benjamin (c1720), Joshua (1723) and Richard (c1725).

Fourth Generation

Lydia Hamilton was born prob. Chatham about 1697 died bef. 20 Jan 1735. She married[7] prob. Chatham abt 1720 Jeremiah Eldredge and they had at least: Elizabeth, Jeremiah and poss. Lydia (c1739 m Barzillai Hopkins).

Mary Hamilton was born Chatham abt 1699 and died 1761. She married Eastham 27 Jan 1721/2 Judah ayo and they had ten children: Lydia (1722/3 m Prince Young), Mary (m Joseph Doane & Samuel Freeman), Richard, Barbara (c1731 m George Smith), Ruth (m. ____), Elizabeth (m Caleb Nickerson), Judah (c1736), Hannah (m ____) Samuel and Priscilla (m ____).


Hannah Sparrow died after 1737. She married Eastham abt 1710 John Hurd and they had eight children: Sarah (1711 m Seth Covell), Rebecca, Joseph (1716/7), Deborah (1718/9 m Abial Crosby), Benjamin, John, Joshua and Hannah (1730/1 m Theodorus Hopkins).

Abigail Sparrow died prob. Eastham bef. 1740. She married Eastham 6 Aug 1713 Samuel May and they had eight children: Rebecca (1714 m Paul Higgins), Samuel (1716), Thomas (1718), Phebe (1720/1 m William Crosby [II]), Abigail (1722/3 prob. m John Hull), Reliance (1724/5 prob. m Lemuel Eldredge), Sarah (1727 m Samuel Paine) and Lois (1731 m Barnabas Howes).

Rebecca Sparrow died Canterbury, CT 15 Sep 1736. She married Eastham or Truro 20 Oct 1720 Joshua Paine and they had nine children: Joshua (1721), Ruth (1723-1740 unm.), Abijah (1725), Elijah (1725-1734), Sparrow (1726-1734), Benajah (1728), Ephraim (1730), Rebecca (1732 m Samuel Dyer [II]) and Ichabod Sparrow.

Abigail Sears was born Harwich 23 Nov 1711 and died Southeast, NY 27 Jul 1795. She married Yarmouth 20 Sep 1738 Peter Hall and they had seven children: Elizabeth (1739 m Nathan Green), Mary (1741 m Benjamin Sears), Morten (1743), Abigail (1745), Bathsheba (1748 m James Foster), David (1756) and Peter (c1757).

Mercy Sears was born Harwich 21 Oct 1713 and died Yarmouth 28 Oct 1790. She married Harwich 10 Oct 1734 Philip Howes and they had six children (Yarmouth): Mary (1735 m Heman Howes), Seth (1737/8), Mercy (1740 m Joshua Howes), infant daughter (1743-1743), Ruth (1744 m Edward Howes) and Desire (1747 m Peter Howes).

Ruth Sears was born Harwich 4 Jul 1715 and died 27 Mar 1761. She married Harwich 21 May 1733 Joseph Sears and they had four children: Isaac (1734-1759), Stephen, Learned (son, 1738), Ruth (1740 m James Wing) and Joseph (1746)

Desire Sears was born Harwich 9 Mar 1716/7 and died Harwich 13 Jan 1802. She married Harwich 4 Mar 1735/6 Lemuel Freeman and they had eight children (Harwich): Desire (1736 m Benjamin Thacher & Nathaniel Stone [II]), Ruth (1739 unm.), Mary (1741 m Stephen Hall), Grace (1743 m Judah Berry), Lemuel (1746), Seth, Cyrenus (1758) and Isaac (1759).

Mary Sears was born Harwich 9 Aug 1718 and died prob. Harwich 20 Oct 1759. She married Harwich 30 Nov 1738 Joseph Snow and they had eleven children (Harwich): Martha (1739 m Ebenezer Foster), Joseph (1740), Isaac (1741), Nathan (1743), Mary (1745 m John Percival), Hannah (1746 m Jonathan Berry), Desire (1748 m John Gould [II]), Sarah (1750 m Paul Cook), Mercy (1752), Silvanus (1754) and Ruth (1756 d.y.)

Hannah Sears was born Harwich 3 Jun 1720 and died there 31 Oct 1760. She married Harwich 2 Nov 1738 Isaac Foster and they had eleven children (Harwich): Isaac (1739), Samuel (1741), David (1742/3), Lemuel (1744/5), Seth (1747), Hannah (1749 m John Gill), Nathaniel (1751), Thomas (1753 d.y.), Elisha (1755 d.y.), Thomas (1756) and Elisha (1758).


Deborah Newcomb was born Truro abt 1702 and died Willington, CT 2 May 1749. She married Eastham 28 Jan 1719/20 Thomas Lamkin and they had four children: Joshua (c1721), Elizabeth (c1723 m John Colburn), Jane (c1725) and Mary (c1730 m Archippus Blodgett).

Mary Newcomb was born Truro abt 1704 and died prob. Eastham 22 Mar 1756. She married Eastham 11 Apr 1723 Luke Stubbs and they had twelve children: Samuel (1725), Mary (1728), Simeon (c1730), Isaac (c1732), Benjamin (c1734), James (c1735), Thomas (c1737), Susanna (c1738 m Simeon Smith), Rebecca (1740 prob. m Levi Wiley), John (c1743), Elizabeth (c1745 m David Howes), and Joseph (c1748).

Elizabeth Newcomb was born Truro abt 1708 and died prob. Eastham aft 6 Apr 1763. She married Eastham 24 Jul 729 Joshua Pierce and they had two children (Eastham): Samuel and Joshua.

Desire Godfrey was born Chatham abt 1710. She married there 26 Sep 1728 Nathaniel Ryder and they had twelve children (Chatham): Nathaniel (1729), Esther (1730 m Thomas Freeman), William (c1733), Deborah (c1735 m Daniel Rogers, Joshua Nickerson & Thomas Doty), Eunice (c1737 m Lumbert Nickerson), Josiah (c1739), Moses (c1741), Jonathan (c1744), John (c1746), Desire (c1748 m Stephen Phillips), Samuel (c1750) and Zerviah (c1752 m William Cheever).

Mary Godfrey was born Chatham 4 Sep 1711 and died there 24 Apr 1782. She married twice first Chatham abt 1732 Caleb Nickerson then Chatham 18 Nov 1756 Seth Smith (no children). By her first husband she had eight children (Chatham): Joshua (1733), Deborah (1734 d.y.), Caleb (1736), Moses (1739), Richard (1741), Mary (1744 m Jonathan Buck), Elizabeth (1745 prob. m Jeremiah Eldredge) and Deborah (1747 m John Harding).

Deborah Godfrey was born Chatham abt 1715 and died there bef. 6 Aug 1763. She married Chatham abt 1740 Thomas Bassett and they had seven children (Chatham): Deborah (c1741 m Samuel Rogers), Mary (c1745 m Jonathan Kenrick), Barbara (c1747 m Philip Jackson), Desire (c1749 m Henry Cole), Martha (1753-1767 unm.), Azubah (m John Hopkins & ____) and Benjamin (1758).

Elizabeth Godfrey was born Chatham 15 Mar 1718 and died there 1 Dec 1742. She married Chatham 31 May 1733 Benjamin Bearse and they had five children (Chatham): Jonathan (c1733), Moses (c1735), Elizabeth (c1737 m Thomas Eldredge), George (c1739) and Benjamin (c1741).

  6. Sometimes called Rebecca and stated to have been deceased in 1697 as not mentioned in her father's probate record. Birth record clearly states Deborah

At the present time no matrilineal (all female line) descendant of Katherine (Whelden) Hopkins has publicly stated they have taken an mtDNA test.
