Biography

First Generation

As is all too common regarding female ancestors, not much is known about Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Bourne.[1] We do not know the names of her parents, her maiden name or when/where she was born (although we can make educated guesses about her origins). She was presumably born in England and likely say 1590 (estimate based on the estimated births of her children). Elizabeth died Marshfield 18 Jul 1660.[2] She and Thomas Bourne were married about 1607 presumably in England (based on the estimated birth dates of their children).[3] The first known record of the family is a land grant at Plymouth in Jan 1637. Therefor, it appears at least some of the family arrived by 1636.

Thomas and Elizabeth had at least five children (all later found in Plymouth Colony): Margaret (c1608), Elizabeth (c1617), Ann(/Sarah) (c1619), John (c1621), and Martha.

Second Generation

Margaret Bourne is said to have been born about 1608[4] She died Marshfield 28 Sep 1683 and was then called aged 75. Margaret married Josiah Winslow presumably in Plymouth about 1637[5] and they had six children (Marshfield): Jonathan (1638), Margaret (1640), Rebecca (1643), Hannah (1644), Mary (c1646) and Martha (c1648).

Elizabeth Bourne was born about 1615[6] and died Marshfield 12 Dec 1663. She was married twice, first Plymouth 11 Dec 1638 Robert Waterman and second Marshfield about 1653 Thomas Tilden. By her first husband, Elizabeth had four children (Marshfield): John (1642), Thomas (1644), Joseph (c1647) and Robert (c1652). By her second husband, Elizabeth had three more children (Marshfield): infant son (1654-1654), infant son (1655-1655) and Lydia (1658).

Ann Bourne[7] was born crca 1617[8] and died likely at Norwich, CT aft 12 Jan 1684. She married Plymouth 21 Jan 1639/40 Nehemiah Smith The family later moved to New Haven (later part of Connecticut) and then Norwich, CT.[9] Nehemiah and Elizabeth had nine children: Elizabeth (c1640), Sarah (c1641), Mary (c1643), Hannah (c1644), Mercy (bp 1645/6), Nehemiah (bp 1646), Lydia (c1647), Ann and Mehitable (1655).[10]

Martha Bourne was born about 1619[11] and died Norwich, CT between 20 Feb 1679/80 and 1683. She married twice, first before 1650 John Bradford and second, Norwich about 1679 Thomas Tracy. It appears Martha did not have any children by either of her husbands.

  1. The only contemporary record for Elizabeth is the Marshfield record of her death. As such, it is possible she may not have been Thomas' only wife, and may not be the mother of his children (or at least some of them).
  2. The only known record for her.
  3. See [https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bourne-2 WikiTree profile for Thomas Bourne for a possible identification of Thomas and his wife, based on the names of their children.
  4. She was called aged 75 (which may simply have been an estimate) at the time of her death in 1683.
  5. First child born 8 Aug 1638.
  6. Estimate, based on first married in 1638.
  7. See Wikitree Profile for Ann Bourne for speculation about her name being "Sarah Ann".
  8. Estimate based on married 1639/40, two years after her sister, Elizabeth.
  9. Their youngest child, Mehitable, was recorded born 4 Jul 1655 at Marshfield It is possible they were visiting family back there when this child was born.
  10. Given the fact many of the children appeared to be born in one year intervals, it is likely the family had a "wet nurse" as breastfeeding children typically doubles as a form of birth control (which is why it is much more typical to see children born every other year).
  11. Estimate, based on first husband born 1617.
