Previous Y-DNA testing

The Nelson Surname Project subgroup I-M253 lists one individual claiming William Nelson (1621-1670, likely father of John) as their Most Distant Known Paternal Ancestor (MDKPA). This individual has not done Y-SNP testing, but has 67 Y-STR tested. Plugging his Y-STR results into Nevgen gives a prediction of I1-M253>DF29>Y2592>CTS6364>CTS10028>S6346>L22>S19986 with a 58% certainty (with the other 42% being a currently unsupported clade).

Further needed testing

We need direct male-line descendants of William Nelson (and preferably of his son John) to WGS/NGS test to confirme and refine this prediction.
