The [https://www.familytreedna.com/public/NelsonFamily?iframe=ycolorized Nelson Surname Project] subgroup I-M253 lists one individual claiming William Nelson (1621-1670, likely father of John) as their Most Distant Known Paternal Ancestor (MDKPA). This individual has not done Y-SNP testing, but has 67 Y-STR tested. Plugging his Y-STR results into Nevgen gives a prediction of I1-M253>DF29>Y2592>CTS6364>CTS10028>S6346>L22>S19986 with a 58% certainty (with the other 42% being a currently unsupported clade).

Status summary

Completed as of April 15, 2021:

  • Recruiting direct male-line descendants of John Nelson for SNP testing - anyone interested in submitting their DNA for testing should contact MayflowerDNA1620@gmail.com

Still to do as of April 15, 2021

  • NGS/WGS test multiple descendants of William Nelson (and preferably of his son John) to place the family clade as well as test descendants to discover any subclades unique to descendants lines

Previous Y-DNA testing

The Nelson Surname Project subgroup I-M253 lists one individual claiming William Nelson (1621-1670, likely father of John) as their Most Distant Known Paternal Ancestor (MDKPA).

Further needed testing

We need direct male-line descendants of William Nelson (and preferably of his son John) to WGS/NGS test to discover the haplogroup/clade for the family.
