Background
Biography
Many genealogists have been searching for the identity of the wife of James Chilton. The only possible clue we currently have is the fact Nahum Mitchell published a History of Bridgewater, Massachusetts in 1840. He reported the given name of Mrs. Chilton was Susanna. When Mitchell was later asked about the source of this information, he could not recall, but he believed he had "good authority" for calling her Susanna.[1][2]
James and his wife were married about 1583 presumably in or near Canterbury, Kent, England where they had their children baptised.[3]
James came over on the Mayflower with his wife and only one of his children, daughter Mary (baptized St. Peter's Parish, Sandwich on 31 May 1607). James died on board the Mayflower while it was docked at Cape Cod Harbour (now Providence) on 8 Dec 1620. His widow died during the general sickness sometime during the winter of 1620/1.
- ↑ The identities of other wives of early Bridgewater settlers made by Judge Mitchell in his 1840 History have since been disproven, which casts doubt about this claim regarding the given name of the wife of James Chilton
- ↑ Some have theorized where the wife may have been Susanna Furber, daughter of his step-mother (Isabell) by her first husband, Francis Furber, but Susanna Furber was baptized 5 Nov 1573, so was not old enough to have a child baptized in 1584.
- ↑ Their first known child, Joell was baptized at St. Paul's Canterbury on 16 Aug 1584. While this baptismal record does not name Joell's parents, his burial record does state he was son of James Chilton.
mtDNA Results
A proposed mtDNA descendant of Mary (Chilton) Winslow has taken a full mtDNA test and posted her results on the Family Tree DNA Mayflower Project[1] This descendant [who descends from Mary's daughter Susanna (Winslow) Latham] has not had their lineage vetted by the General Society of Mayflower Descendants (GSMD), but is an exact HVR1+HVR2 match to a mtDNA descendant of Mary (Winslow) Gray, a sister to Susanna (Winslow) Latham.[2]
The Haplogroup assigned to the full mtDNA results is T2b, but all three results include an additional HVR2 mutation at: 16288C.[3]

- ↑ It is currently unknown if this second descendant is a GSMD member or not. In addition, there is a third full mtDNA match to someone who also claims to be a mtDNA descendant of Susanna (Winslow) Latham, but has not joined the GSMD/
- ↑ It is hoped this additional mutation would form a new subclade of T2b at some time in the future.
