Paper trail

First Generation

Robert Mendum was born, presumably in England abt 1602 date, place and parentage currently unknown. He died Kittery, ME bet 1 May 1682 (will) and 16 May 1682 (inventory). He married twice, first by 1639 Mary ____ and second by 1658 widow Judith ____ (no ch.) By his first wife he had two children (Kittery): Sarah (c1647) and Jonathan (by 1650).

Second Generation

Jonathan Mendum was born Kittery by 1650[1] and died there bef Aug 1693.[2] He married Kittery bef 2 Mar 1672 Mary Barnes[3] and they had at least five children: Jonathan (c1678), Robert (b 1682), David (b 1682), Dorothy (c1686) and Nathaniel.

Third Generation

Robert Mendum was named in the 1682 will of his grandfather, Robert Mendum. In his 1701 probate record, it is stated he had been absent for ten years and presumed dead. It is believed this Robert Mendum was a sailor, and likely was lost at sea.

Jonathan Mendum (II) was born Kittery abt 1678 and died there in May 1718. He married Kittery bef 20 May 1702 Sarah Downing[4] and they had seven children: Patience, Robert (not named in father's 1725 estate distribution), Mary, Alice, Dorothy, David and Joshua. It is currently unknown whether any of the sons were ever married.

David Mendum was named in the 1682 will of his grandfather, Robert Mendum. According to Noyes, Libby & Davis, he died abt 1719 and had a son Robert (m ____ Pray).

Nathaniel Mendum, Esq. was born 2 Apr 1690 and died Portsmouth 30 Aug 1771. He married bef 8 May 1712 Frances Lyde and had three daus.: Eleanor, Elizabeth and Mary.

  1. Witnessed a will dated 4 Apr 1664
  2. His widow Mary was already wife of John Woodman by Aug 1693.
  3. After Jonathan's death, Mary married John Woodman.
  4. After Jonathan's death Sarah married Joseph Curtis.

DNA results

At the present time it is unknown whether Robert Mendum has any surviving patrilineal/Y-DNA descendants.
