Biography

First Generation

Mary Tilson was born England about 1627 and died Plymouth before Sep 1698, daughter of Edmund Tilson and Joanna _____ (Rickard).[1] Mary married Plymouth 23 Dec 1652 James Cole and they had (among others): Mary (1653), Martha (c1672) and Joanna (c1679)

Second Generation

Mary Cole was born Scituate 3 Dec 1653 and died Barnstable before Dec 1695. She married Barnstable 3 Jan 1671/2 John Lothrop (Lathrop) (II) and they had ten children (Barnstable): John (1673), Mary (1675), Martha (1677), Elizabeth (1679), James (1681), Hannah (1682/3), Jonathan (1684), Barnabas (1686), Abigail (1689) and Experience (1691-1693).

Martha Cole was born Plymouth about 1672 and died there 11 Aug 1718. She married (as his first wife) Plymouth 16 Mar 1696/7 Nathaniel Howland and they had five children (Plymouth): Joseph (1699 d.y.), Mary (1701/2), Nathaniel (1705), Hannah (bp 1707) and Joseph (1708).

Joanna Cole was born Plymouth about 1679 and died Plymouth 4 Jan 1760, daughter of James Cole and Mary Tilson. She married about 1699 Thomas Howland and they had eight children (Plymouth): Consider (son, 1700), Joanna (1702-1715), Experience (1705), Thomas (1707), Elizabeth (1710), Hannah (1712), Joanna (1716) and Joseph (1718).

Third Generation

Mary Lathrop/Lothrop was born Barnstable 27 Oct 1675 and died Plymouth 26 May 1723. She married Barnstable 8 Sep 1697 James Howland and they had six children (Plymouth): Hannah (1699 m [[Rickard (Y-DNA)#Next Generation| James Rickard), Abigail (1702 m Caleb Cooke (II), son of Caleb Cooke), Elizabeth (1704 m Thomas Washburn (II)), Thankful (1709 m Ebenezer Smith), John (1711) and James (1713).


Mary Howland was born Plymouth 15 Feb 1701/2 and died there 13 Feb 1730. She married Plymouth 19 Apr 1723 Thomas Weston and they had one child (Plymouth): Thomas (1724/5).


Experience Howland was born Plymouth 30 Nov 1705 and died there 5 Sep 1748. She married Plymouth 22 Dec 1727 Benjamin Lothrop and they had eight children (Plymouth): Hannah (1729-1736), John (1731), Benjamin (1733), Thomas (1735-1736), Thomas (1737-1737), Nathaniel (1738-1739), Joseph (1741) and Thomas (1743).

Hannah Howland was born Plymouth 19 Dec 1712 and died Fredericktown, NB 23 May 1795. She married twice, first Plymouth 29 Oct 1734 William Dyer and second, Plymouth 19 Apr 1741 Edward Winslow. By her first husband she had two children (Plymouth): Hannah (1736-1737) and Hannah (1737). By her second husband she had five more children (Plymouth): John (1741-1742), Penelope (1743-1810 unm.), Sarah (1744/5-1823 unm.), Edward (1746) and infant son (1748-1748).

Joanna Howland was born Plymouth 7 May 1716 and died there 23 Sep 1810. She married Plymouth 23 Feb 1743/4 Gideon White and they had nine children (Plymouth): Joanna (c1744), Cornelius (c1745), Hannah (bp 1748-1841 unm.), Elizabeth (1750-1756), Mary "Polly" (bp 1753-1838 unm.), Gideon (bp 1754), Experience (dau, 1756-1756), Thomas (bp 1757-1759) and Elizabeth (bp 1759).

Fourth Generation

Hannah Dyer was born Plymouth 15 Sep 1737. She married Stephen Miller.


Joanna White was born Plymouth about 1744 and died Plymouth 2 May 1829. She married Pelham Winslow and had at least: Joanna (1773 m Nathan Hayward).

Elizabeth White was baptized Plymouth 19 Jun 1759 and died after May 1811. She married Hamilton L. Earl


  1. After the death of Edmund Tilson, Joanna married Plymouth 20 May 1662 Giles Rickard (no children).

Previous mtDNA testing

To date, no known direct female line descendants of Mary TILSON Cole are known to have done mtDNA testing and published their results. Anyone who believes they descend in a direct female line (ie mother's mother's mother's etc mother) is encouraged to contact MayflowerDNA1620@gmail.com
