Status summary

Completed as of October 1, 2020:

  • Recruiting additional direct male-line Young descendants for further SNP testing - anyone interested in submitting their DNA for testing should contact MayflowerDNA1620@gmail.com
  • Y-STR testing of four individuals of George Young (father of Thomas)

Still to do as of August 29, 2020

  • NGS/WGS test multiple descendants of Thomas Young to firmly place family clade as well as test descendants to discover any subclades unique to descendants lines

Biography

First Generation

Thomas Young was born in Scituate 5 Nov 1663, son of George Young[1] and Hannah Pincin. Thomas died at Scituate 25 Dec 1732. He married Scituate in Jan 1688/9 to Sarah White. They had nine children (Scituate): George (1689), Joseph (1692-1699), Sarah (1695-1699), Thomas (1698-1699), Thomas (1700), Joseph (1701), Ebenezer (1703, never married), Joshua (17004) and Isaac (1706).

Second Generation

George Young was born Scituate 30 Nov 1689 and died Boston in May 1771. He married twice, first Scituate 16 Aug 1716, Margaret Frank (no children) and second, Scituate 25 Apr 1722 Mary Stockbridge. By his second wife, George had twelve children (Scituate): Isaac (1723), James (1724), Mary (c1725), Deborah (1727), Reuben (1729), Job (1731), Priscilla (1732/3), Lusannah (1734), Lillis (1736), Sylvanus (1739), Lucy (1739) and Jenny (1742).

Thomas Young was born Scituate 18 May 1700 and died there bef 12 Apr 1776. He married three times, first Scituate 12 Apr 1737 Mary House, second Scituate 19 Feb 1756 Jael Whiton and third Scituate 11 Dec 1760 Hannah ____. He is only known to have had two children (both by his second wife) born Scituate: Sarah (1757) and Thomas (1758).

Joseph Young was born Scituate 10 Oct 1701 and died there bef 21 Oct 1763. He married Scituate 5 Sep 1729 Lydia Barrell and they had at least three children (Scituate): Ruth (1729), Ezekiel (1731) and Sarah (1733).

Joshua Young was born Scituate 27 Sep 1704 and died there bef 29 Oct 1757. He married twice, first Scituate 22 Aug 1732 Elizabeth Cudworth and second Boston 11 Dec 1751 Lydia Barnard. Joshua is only known to have had two children by his first wife (Scituate): Hannah (1733) and Joshua (c1742).

  1. Some sources state George was son of John Young and Abigail Howland (daughter of Henry Howland, brother to Pilgrim John Howland). However the Young surname DNA Project documents where John Young falls under R1B-M269 Group 4 while George Young falls under R1B-M269 Group 15 and their Y-STR markers are too diverse to be related. While George likely was born in Plymouth Colony, his parentage has not been discovered.

DNA results R1b-S19589

Previous Y-DNA testing

Young DNA Project Subgroup R1b M269 Group 15 has four males tested. None of the four have done any Y-SNP testing and two of them have done Y-67 STR testing. Plugging in the 67 Y-STR values into the Nevgen Haplogroup Prediction tool (set to predict R1b haplogroups) gives a 60.33% probability of the family falls under the U106>S19589 clade.

Further needed testing

We need additional direct male-line descendants of Thomas Young to WGS/NGS test to both confirm the lineage as well as to refine the haplogroup further and delineate descendant clades.
