Status summary

Completed as of September 30, 2020:

  • Recruiting additional direct male-line descendants of Capt. Jonathan Sparrow for further SNP testing - anyone interested in submitting their DNA for testing should contact Raymond T. Wing (email: wing.genealogist AT gmail DOT com)

Still to do as of September 30, 2020

  • NGS/WGS test multiple descendants of Capt. Jonathan Sparrow to place the family clade as well as test descendants to discover any subclades unique to descendants lines

Biography

First Generation

Richard Sparrow was born about 1605, presumably somewhere in Kent, England. He married Pandora[1] They emigrated to Plymouth Colony in 1632.[2] The family originally lived in Plymouth but moved to Eastham, where Richard is first recorded on 6 Apr 1653.[3] Richard died in Eastham 8 Jan 1660/1.[4] His wife survived him, but her date of death is unknown.

Richard and Pandora only had one (surviving) child: Jonathan

Second Generation

Jonathan Sparrow was supposedly "born" somewhere in Kent, England on 26 Oct 1633.[5] He died at Eastham (now East Orleans), Massachusetts 21 Mar 1706/7, aged 73 years[6] He was married three times, with his first marriage Eastham 26 Oct 1654 to Rebecca Bangs (death unknown). His second marriage is said to have been at Eastham 5 Jul 1667[7] to Hannah PRENCE Mayo (daughter of Gov. Thomas Prence & Patience Brewster and the widow of Nathaniel Mayo). Hannah's death is unknown, but Jonathan married for a third time at Barnstable, 23 Nov 1698 to Sarah (Lewis) Cobb.

Jonathan and his first wife Rebecca had seven children (but these children do not have ancestry going back to a Mayflower passenger. Jonathan and his second wife, Hannah, had three children; (two daughters and son Richard). Jonathan and his third wife, Sarah, had no children.

Third Generation

Richard Sparrow was born Eastham 17 Mar 1669/70 and died there 13 Apr 1728. He married Mercy Cobb at East Hampton, CT 4 Feb 1700/1. They had at least 3 daughters and one son, Richard.

References

  1. Many sources claim she was daughter of Edward Bangs & Rebecca Hobart, but proof is lacking.
  2. Anderson's TGMB III:1715 states he was in the 1633 Plymouth list of Freeman, along with others who were admitted on 1 Jan 1632/3 (PCR 1:4)
  3. ibid., from PCR 3:24, 79, 99

  5. Miner Descent: Profile of Jonathan Sparrow but no source given
  6. original gravestone at the Cove Burying Ground in Eastham
  7. Miner Descent: Profile of Jonathan Sparrow again with no source. Anderson, TGMB III:1717 only states Jonathan and Hannah were married by 1671 (and probably by 1669)

DNA results

Previous Y-DNA testing

The Sparrow DNA Surname Project currently lists thirteen males who have done a variety of Y-STR & Y-SNP testing. Unfortunately, there is no way to determine which (if any) of these individuals descend from (Capt.) Jonathan Sparrow & Hannah Prence[1]

Further needed testing

We need additional direct male-line descendants of Richard Sparrow b ca 1605 (and ideally Y-DNA descendants of Richard b 1669/70) to WGS/NGS test to both confirm the lineage as well as to refine the haplogroup further and delineate descendant clades.

  1. Two of the individuals fall under Y-DNA Haplogroup I-M253, while most of the others are predicted to fall under R1b-M269 with both R-U106 and R-P312 subclades among the testers.
