Biography

First Generation

Richard Sparrow was born about 1605, presumably somewhere in Kent, England. He married Pandora[1] They emigrated to Plymouth Colony in 1632.[2] The family originally lived in Plymouth but moved to Eastham, where Richard is first recorded on 6 Apr 1653.[3] Richard died in Eastham 8 Jan 1660/1.[4] His wife survived him, but her date of death is unknown.

Richard and Pandora only had one (surviving) child: Jonathan

Second Generation

Jonathan Sparrow was supposedly "born" somewhere in Kent, England on 26 Oct 1633.[5] He died at Eastham (now East Orleans), Massachusetts 21 Mar 1706/7, aged 73 years[6] He was married three times, with his first marriage Eastham 26 Oct 1654 to Rebecca Bangs (death unknown). His second marriage is said to have been at Eastham between 5 Jun 1667 - 11 Sep 1671[7] to Hannah PRENCE Mayo (daughter of Gov. Thomas Prence & Patience Brewster and the widow of Nathaniel Mayo). Hannah's death is unknown, but Jonathan married for a third time at Barnstable, 23 Nov 1698 to Sarah (Lewis) Cobb.

Jonathan and his first wife Rebecca had seven children (but these children do not have ancestry going back to a Mayflower passenger). Jonathan and his second wife, Hannah, had three children; (two daughters and son Richard). Jonathan and his third wife, Sarah, had no children.

Third Generation

Richard Sparrow was born Eastham 17 Mar 1669/70 and died there 13 Apr 1728. He married Mercy Cobb at Eastham 4 Feb 1701/2. They had nine children; seven daughters and sons Richard & Jonathan (the latter died young).

DNA results

Previous Y-DNA testing

The Sparrow DNA Surname Project currently lists thirteen males who have done a variety of Y-STR & Y-SNP testing. Unfortunately, there is no way to determine which (if any) of these individuals descend from (Capt.) Jonathan Sparrow & Hannah Prence[1]

Further needed testing

We need additional direct male-line descendants of Richard Sparrow b ca 1605 (and ideally Y-DNA descendants of Richard b 1669/70) to WGS/NGS test to both confirm the lineage as well as to refine the haplogroup further and delineate descendant clades.

  1. Two of the individuals fall under Y-DNA Haplogroup I-M253, while most of the others are predicted to fall under R1b-M269 with both R-U106 and R-P312 subclades among the testers.
