Background

Biography

The General Society of Mayflower Descendants (GSMD) and the Pilgrim Hopkins Heritage Society (PHHS) have provisionally accepted the identity of Mary Kent, daughter of Robert Kent & Joan Machell of Hursley, Hants, as the first wife of Stephen Hopkins. This identification was first proposed by by Simon Neal in a couple of Mayflower Quarterly articles.[1] Caleb Johnson also stated this identification was probable.[2]

Stephen & Mary were married about 1603, likely at the parish church in Hursley. They had children baptized (at Hursley) 13 May 1604 (Elizabeth), 11 May 1606 (Constance), and 30 Jan 1607/8 (Giles).[3] Mary was buried at Hursley on 9 May 1613.[4]

mtDNA Results V

According to "The Mayflower Quarterly"[1], three mtDNA descendants from three of the four known daughters of Constance (Hopkins) Snow: viz: Sarah (Snow) Walker, Ruth (Snow) Cole, and Mary (Snow) Paine, all were DNA tested and they all came up matching each other. The FamilyTreeDNA Mayflower Project currently has four individuals listed under Mary, wife of Stephen Hopkins.[2] They all fall under the V Haplogroup[3]

mtDNA Descendants

First Generation

Mary & Stephen had one son (Giles) and two daughters (Elizabeth & Constance). Elizabeth did not come to New Plimouth with her father, and is believed to have died before 1620.

Second Generation

Constance was baptized at Hursley, Hants 11 May 1606. She married Nicholas Snow[4] sometime shortly before the 1627 Cattle Division. Bradford stated they had twelve children, but only the names of nine of them are currently known. Of these nine there were five sons and four daughters (Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth & Ruth)[5]

Third Generation

Mary Snow was born about 1630 and married (Eastham Jul 1650) Thomas Paine (II). They had nine sons and two daughters: Mary (c1651) & Dorcas (1669).

Sarah Snow was born about 1632 and married (Eastham 25 Feb 1654/5) William Walker. They had four sons and two daughters: Sarah (1662) & Elizabeth[6] (1664-p1697[7], never married)

Elizabeth Snow was born about 1640 and married (Eastham 13 Dec 1665) Thomas Rogers. They had five sons and two daughters: Elizabeth (1666)[8] and Hannah (1669).

Ruth Snow was born about 1644 and married (Eastham 10 Dec 1666) Lieut. John Cole. They had three sons and five daughters (Ruth [1667/8], Hepzibah [1672, likely never married][9], Hannah [1675, never married], Mary [1679, never married], & Sarah [1682, never married]).

Fourth Generation

Mary Paine was born Eastham about 1650 and died before 21 Jan 1723.[10] She married twice, first Eastham 11 Jan 1670/1 to James Rogers (d. 1678) and second Eastham 24 Apr 1679 to Israel Cole (II). By her first husband, Mary had three children (born Eastham): James (1673), Mary (1675 m. [Lt.] John Cole [II]) and Abigail (1677/8 m. John Yeats/Yates). By her second husband, Mary had two children (born Eastham): Hannah (1681 m. Samuel Higgins) and Israel (III) (1685).

Dorcas Paine was born Eastham about 1669 and died Hull, MA 30 Oct 1707. She married Eastham about 1689 Benjamin Vickery and they had seven children (born Hull): Joseph (1690), Benjamin (1692), Thomas (1695), Dorcas (1698 m. Jonathan Sparrow [II]), Phebe (1701/2-1718), Sarah (1705 poss.m. Thomas Higgins) and Ichabod (1707)

Sarah Walker was born Eastham 30 Jul 1662 and died Barnstable 6 Nov 1693. She married Barnstable 19 Nov 1685 Benjamin Lombard and they had four children (born Barnstable): Sarah (1686 m. Job Hinkley), Bathshua (1687 m. Joseph Mitchell), Mary (1688 m. Benjamin O'Killey) and Samuel (1691).

Hannah Rogers was born Eastham 20 Mar 1669 and died there 19 Jul 1733. She married Eastham before 1694 to Amaziah Harding and they had nine children (born Eastham): Hannah (1694 m. Bartholomew Fish), John (1697), Thomas (1699), James (1702), Mary (1706 m. Launcelot "Lot" Clark), Elizabeth (1708 m. Rowland Fish), Phebe (1710 m. Benjamin Rogers), Nathan (1711) and Cornelius (1717)

Ruth Cole was born Eastham 11 Mar 1667/8 and died there after 4 Mar 1727. She married Eastham 21 Mar 1688/9 William Twining (III) and they had seven children (born Eastham): Elizabeth (1690 m. Joseph Merrick & Nathaniel Bassett), Thankful (1696/7 m. Jonathan Mayo), Ruth (1699 m. Joshua Higgins), Hannah (1702 m. David Young), William (1704), Barnabas (1705) and Mercy (1707/8 m. David Higgins).
