Biography

First Generation

Joseph Kent was born in England about 1637.[1] and died Rehoboth 5 Sep 1704. While his parents are currently unknown, he had brothers Joshua & John. The date and circumstances of his arrival in New England is currently unknown. Joseph married at Swansea before 1665 to Susanna ______ Austin, widow of George Austin.[2] They had four children: Joseph, Samuel, Joshua & Susanna

Second Generation

Joseph Kent (II) was born at Swansea about 1665. He married twice, first Dorothy Brown and second Mary ____. He only had children by his first wife and they had nine[3] children: Lydia (1691), Joseph (1693), Dorothy (1695), John (1697), Hezekiah (1699/1700), Susanna (1701/2), Mary (1703/4) and James (1707).

(Ens.) Samuel Kent was born Swansea 23 Mar 1668 and died Barrington (now in RI) 15 May 1737. He married Desire Cushman and they had two children (born Swansea): Hannah (1702) and Josiah (1705).

Joshua Kent[4] was born Taunton about 1672 and died Barrington, RI 14 Aug 1725. He married Mary Toogood and had six daughters: Sarah, Hannah, Susanna, Lydia, Mary & Bethiah.

Third Generation

Joseph Kent (III) was born Swansea 3 Aug 1693 and died at Strafford, CT 7 Dec 1771. He married Rehoboth 7 Dec 1721 Bethiah Thurston and they had nine children (born Rehoboth): Joseph (1722-1735), Samuel (1724/5 m Hannah Carpenter), Joshua (1727/8 m Sarah Cross & poss. Elizabeth Lindsey), Hannah (1730), Jabez (1732 m Sarah Johnson), Nathan (1734 unk. if marr.), Joseph (1737-1756), Benjamin (1739 m Mehitable Johnson) and Bethiah (1742).

John Kent was born Swansea 9 Aug 1697 and died there 20 Nov 1780. He married twice, first. int. Rehoboth 20 Nov 1725 Rachel Carpenter and second there 12 Oct 1749 Rebecca SMITH Carpenter. By first wife, John had nine children (born Rehoboth): Elijah (1727 m Hannah Perren), Dorothy (1729/30), John (1732-1736), Nathaniel (1734-1752), Joseph (1736/7 m Huldah Barrows), John (1739 unk if marr), Mary (1741), Ezekiel (1744 m Ruth Garnzey) and Remember (1746). By his second wife he had one more child (born Rehoboth): Rebecca (1750).

Hezekiah Kent was born Swansea 6 Feb 1699/1700 and died Rehoboth 21 Feb 1786. He married twice, first Lillis Humphrey and second 4 Jan 1727/8 Ruth Cooper. All children by second wife: Hezekiah (1728-1728/9), Hezekiah (1729/30-1741), Sarah (1731/2), Ezra (1734 m Ruth Cushing), Ruth (1736/7), Hannah (1740) and Hezekiah (1745 m Elizabeth Humphrey).

James Kent was born Swansea 20 Aug 1707 and died after 1753. He married Rehoboth 30 Dec 1736 Martha Barstow and they had six children: Noah (1737/8 m Martha ____), James (1739 m Lydia Brown), Sarah (1744-1746/7), Sarah (1746/7), Hannah (1750-1752) and George (1753 unk if marr).


Josiah Kent was born Swansea 9 Sep 1705 and died between 9 May - 1 Aug 1748. He married Rehoboth 4 Sep 1730 Alethea Bullock and they had seven children (born Barrington): Susannah (1732), Samuel (1733 m Ruth ____), Hannah (1737), Josiah (1741 m Elizabeth Bullock), Anies (1743), Annah (1745) and Joshua (1746 m Anna Low).


  1. He deposed 19 Mar 1653 aged 16
  2. An alternate identity has her being Susanna, daughter of Peter George of Braintree and New Shoreham, RI.
  3. The Rehoboth VRs give the mother as Clarissa for children 4-9, but no other record gives this name. Needs further research. mtDNA of this family may be able to determine whether their was a third wife.
  4. WikiTree claims Joshua was son of John Kent and Hannah Bill, born Charlestown, MA 16 Jun 1672. However, no source is given for this identification.
