Status summary

Completed as of October 1, 2020:

  • Recruiting additional direct male-line descendants of Richard Church for further SNP testing - anyone interested in submitting their DNA for testing should contact Raymond T. Wing (email: wing.genealogist AT gmail DOT com)

Still to do as of September 30, 2020

  • NGS/WGS test multiple descendants of Richard Church to place the family clade as well as test descendants to discover any subclades unique to descendants lines

Biography

First Generation

Richard Church was born in England about 1608 and died in Dedham 26 Dec 1668. He emigrated to New England in 1630, but which ship he came over on is currently unknown. He was a carpenter, and originally came to help settle Wessagusset [Weymouth] in Massachusetts Bay Colony. He soon moved to Plymouth where he married Elizabeth Warren 7 Mar 1636/7. The family moved to Nauset (now Eastham) in 1649, but was in Charlestown by 1652, and finally at Hingham by 1654.

Richard and Elizabeth had ten children; five daughters and five sons (Joseph, Benjamin, Nathaniel, Charles and Caleb)

The Church DNA Project Lists six male Church's in Subgroup: R1b - Lineage V - Richard Church of Plymouth. None of these individuals have done any Y-SNP testing, but they have all done Y-STR 67 testing, with one member completing 111 Y-STR testing. Plugging in the 111 STR values into the Nevgen.org haplogroup predictor[1] the predictor gives an 80.4% chance the family falls under the R1b DF27>Z196>L176.2>CTS4188> S11121 haplogroup and a 8.1% of falling under R1b DF27>Z196>L176.2>CTS4188>BY3252[2]

Further needed testing

We need additional direct male-line descendants of Richard Church to WGS/NGS test to both confirm the lineage as well as to refine the haplogroup further and delineate descendant clades.

  1. refined for R1b clades
  2. With an 11.5% chance of falling outside of these two haplogroups.
