First Generation

James Burroughs was born abt 1650 and died prob. in Bristol (now in RI) aft 10 Oct 1699. He married twice, first Hingham 8 Dec 1674 Sarah Church and second abt 1693 Anne/Ame ____.[1] By his first wife, James had four children: James (1677-1687), Mary (1679), Elizabeth (d. 1699) and Thomas (1685).

Second Generation

Thomas Burroughs was born Bristol (now in RI) 12 Jul 1685 and died prob. Newport, RI 16 Dec 1722. He married abt 1706 Abigail ____[2] and they had six children: William (c1707-1767 likely unm.), Freelove (c1709), Samuel (c1712), Mary (c1714), Benjamin (c1716-1740 unm.) and Peleg (c1722).

Third Generation

Samuel Burroughs was born Prudence Island (Portsmouth, RI) abt 1712 and died Newport, RI 21 Oct 1801. He married twice, first Newport 18 Jan 1739/40 Mary Brown then Middletown 28 Jan 1745/6 Mary Greene. By his first wife he had one child: William (1742 m Catherine Gardner & Susanna CHILD Burroughs). By his second wife he had nine more children: Samuel (1746 poss. m Mary Taylor), Peleg (1748 m Keziah BURDICK West), John (1750), Mary (1752), Rebecca, Abigail, Thomas, Sarah and Greene (c1759 m Sarah Tilley & Ann ___ Marshall).

Peleg Burroughs was born Newport, RI abt 1722 and died bef Nov 1782. He married Newport 15 Nov 1770 Susanna Child but no children are known.


  1. While James had one son by his second wife, the child was not descended from a Mayflower passenger.
  2. After Thomas' death, Abigail married William Toppin.

Previous Y-DNA testing

The Burroughs DNA Project currently does not list anyone claiming James Burroughs as their most Distant Known Paternal Ancestor (MDKPA).

Further needed testing

We need additional direct male-line descendants of James Burroughs to WGS/NGS test to discover the haplogroup/clade for the family.
