Background

Paper trail

Elder William Brewster was born circa 1566[1]" in or near Scrooby, Northamptonshire, England, the son of William (II) Brewster & Mary SMYTHE Simkinson. He is said to be the grandson of William (I) and Maud Mann. He died at Plymouth on 18 Apr 1644, and Bradford called him "nere fourskore years of age" (ie nearly age 80).

Brewster married about 1592[2] to Mary _____ (maiden name unknown despite an extensive search). They had one child who died shortly after birth, three daughters and two sons: Jonathan & Love (who carry on the Y-DNA line). Y-DNA descendants of both sons have completed DNA testing and verified the Y-DNA of Elder William.

Previous Y-DNA testing

Previous Y-STR testing through the Mayflower Society[3] and the Brewster surname DNA project[4] has indicated that the Brewster lineage belongs to the Y haplogroup I-M253, which is quite common in Northern Europe and Northwestern Europe. Details of previous findings are summarized here (a 2007 posting to ancestry.com Brewster surname board). Y Elite test results will be able to place the Brewster lineage more precisely within the broader I-M253 group.
