Elder William Brewster was born circa 1566[1]" in or near Scrooby, Northamptonshire, England, the son of William (II) Brewster & Mary SMYTHE Simkinson. He is said to be the grandson of William (I) and Maud Mann. He died at Plymouth on 10 Apr 1644[2], and Bradford called him "nere fourskore years of age" (ie nearly age 80).
Brewster married about 1592[3] to Mary _____ (maiden name unknown despite an extensive search). They had one child who died shortly after birth, two daughters and three sons: Jonathan, Love & Wrestling (who never married). Y-DNA descendants of both Jonathan and Love have completed DNA testing and verified the Y-DNA of Elder William.
Previous Y-DNA testing
Previous Y-STR testing through the Mayflower Society[4] and the Brewster surname DNA project[5] has indicated that the Brewster lineage belongs to the Y haplogroup I-M253, which is quite common in Northern Europe and Northwestern Europe. Details of previous findings are summarized here (a 2007 posting to ancestry.com Brewster surname board). Y Elite test results will be able to place the Brewster lineage more precisely within the broader I-M253 group.
