Biography

First Generation

Abigail Cary was born Bristol (now in RI) 31 Aug 1684, daughter of John Cary and Abigail Allen. She died there 6 Aug 1737. Abigail married (as his first wife) Bristol 6 May 1708 Samuel Howland and they had eight children (Bristol): Samuel (1709), Abigail (1710), John (1713), Tabitha (1715), Seth (1719-1719), Phebe (1720/1), Mary (1722/3) and Mehitable (1724/5)

Second Generation (all born Bristol, then in MA, now in RI)

Abigail Howland was born 18 Oct 1710 and died there 9 Aug 1751. She married twice, first Bristol 23 Oct 1729 Israel Church and second Bristol 31 May 1739 Benjamin Smith. By her first husband Abigail had three children (Bristol): Nathaniel (1730/1-1738), Abigail (1732/3-1737) and Sarah (1734/5). By her second husband she had five more children (Bristol): Benjamin (1739/40), Josiah (1742), Nathaniel (1744/5), Joseph (1747) and Samuel (1749-1751).

Tabitha Howland was born 13 Jan 1715 and died Petersham 4 Feb 1793. She married twice, first Bristol, RI 12 May 1734 Nathaniel Cary and second, Bristol 22 Apr 1742 John Peckham. By her first husband, Tabitha had one child (Newport, RI): Josiah (1738/9-1739). By her second husband she had seven more children: Robert (1742/3), Abigail (1744-1762 unm.), Samuel (1746), Tabitha (1748-1748/9), William (1750/1), Sarah "Sally" (1753) and Josiah (1756).

Phebe Howland was born 9 Mar 1720/1 and died Bristol, RI 30 Nov 1794. She married Bristol 11 Oct 1741 John Wardwell and they had twelve children (Bristol): John (1742), Nathaniel (1744), Joseph (1746/7), Phebe (1748), Susanna (1750/1), Elizabeth (twin, 1753), Mary (twin, 1753), Samuel (1755), Tabitha (bp 1758), Daniel (bp 1760), Allen (1762-1762) and Allen (1765).

Mary Howland was born 18 Mar 1722/3 and died Bristol, RI 3 Jun 1797. She married Bristol 26 Sep 1742 William Wardwell and they had nine children (Bristol): William (1743), Abigail (1745), Mary (bp 1747), William (bp 1749/50), Benjamin (bp 1753), Sarah (bp 1754), Martin/Martha (1755-1757), Samuel (1758-1759) and Samuel (bp 1760).

Mehitable Howland was born 1 Feb 1724/5 and died Bristol, RI 13/18 Feb 1764. She married Bristol 18 Dec 1746 Stephen Wardwell and they had six children (Bristol): Elizabeth (1749), Abigail (1751), Stephen (1754-1754), Josiah (1757), James (1760) and Hannah (1762).

Third Generation (all born Bristol, RI)

Sarah Church was born 19 Feb 1734/5 and died in Vermont 26 Apr 1811. She married John Anthony and they had at least Albro (1762).


Sarah "Sally" Peckham was born 15 Feb 1753 and died RI 23 Sep 1800. She married Providence 2 Oct 1781 John Davis


Phebe Wardwell was born 23 Jan 1748/9. She married James Smith

Susanna Wardwell was born 15 Jan 1750/1. She married Daniel Gladding

Elizabeth Wardwell was born 6 Jan 1753. She married Jonathan Fales

Mary Wardwell was born 6 Jan 1753. She married Peleg Pitman

Tabitha Wardwell was bp 29 Jan 1758. She married Samuel Bosworth


Abigail Wardwell was born 3 Jun 1745. She married Restcome Sanford

Mary Wardwell was bp 25 Oct 1747. She married Sanford Munroe

Sarah Wardwell was bp 3 Mar 1754. She married Moses Van Doorn


Abigail Wardwell was born 24 Dec 1751. She married Thomas Pearse

Hannah Wardwell was born 6 Nov 1762. She married Elisha May.
