Status summary

Completed as of April 15, 2021:

  • Recruiting direct male-line descendants of Thomas Gibbs for SNP testing - anyone interested in submitting their DNA for testing should contact Raymond T. Wing (email: wing.genealogist AT gmail DOT com)

Still to do as of April 15, 2021

  • NGS/WGS test multiple descendants of Thomas Gibbs (and preferably of his son Thomas (II)) to place the family clade as well as test descendants to discover any subclades unique to descendants lines

Biography

First Generation

Thomas Gibbs (II) was born Sandwich 23 Mar 1646/7, son of Thomas Gibbs and died there 7 Jan 1732/3. He married Sandwich 23 Dec 1674 Alice Warren and they had eight children (born Sandwich): Bethiah (1675), Abigail (c1677), Thomas (1678/9), Sarah (c1683), Warren (c1685), Ebenezer (c1687-c1725 unm.), Jabez (c1689-c1725 unm.) and Cornelius (c1691).

Second Generation

Thomas Gibbs (III) was born Sandwich 28 Jan 1678/9 and died there abt 1745. He married twice, first Sandwich 22 Oct 1713 Joanna Swift and second Sandwich 22 Oct 1728 Dorothy ___ Jenkins. By his first wife he had three children (born Sandwich): Experience 1714, Elizabeth 1717 and Joanna 1719. By his second wife he had one more child (born Sandwich): Solomon (1729/30).

Warren Gibbs was born Sandwich abt 1685 and died aft 25 Feb 1764. DNA results R1b-BY66388

Previous Y-DNA testing

The Gibbs Surname DNA Project Group: The Massachusetts Bay Colony Gibbs Clade - R1b1a2 lists one individual claiming Thomas Gibbs as their Most Distant Known Paternal Ancestor (MDKPA). This group also had a number of Matthew Gibbs descendants, so it is possible the individual claiming Thomas Gibbs as his ancestor may have been in error. The Y-STRs of the supposed Thomas Gibbs descendant was a close match (65/67) to the Matthew Gibbs group, so if this individual was actually descended from Thomas Gibbs, the DNA results prove Thomas and Matthew shared a currently unknown paternal Gibbs ancestry somewhere in England. One Matthew Gibbs descendant has Y-SNP tested to: R-P312>ZZ11>U152>L2>Z49>Z142>Z51>L562>BY158668>BY66388.

Further needed testing

We need additional direct male-line descendants of Thomas Gibbs (and preferably of his son Thomas [II]) to WGS/NGS test to confirm the single Thomas Gibbs line as well as possibly further refine the haplogroup/clade prediction for the family.
