Biography

First Generation

Thomas Baxter was born, presumably in England, about 1653[1] and died at (West) Yarmouth on 22 Jun 1713. [1] The date and circumstances of his emigration to New England is currently unknown. He married Temperance Gorham 27 Jan 1679/80 at Yarmouth. They had three sons: John (c1680). Thomas (C1683) and Shubael (1687).

Second Generation (born Yarmouth)

John Baxter was born about 1680 and died (likely at Yarmouth) aft Apr 1749.[2] He married Yarmouth 11 Jun 1706 Desire Gorham and they had twelve children (Yarmouth): Elizabeth (1706/7), Sarah (1708), Jane "Jeney" (1710), Temperance (1712), John (1714), Joseph (1715/6), Isaac (1717/8), Hezekiah (1720), Desire (1721/2-1721/2), Samuel (1722/3 d.y.), Thomas (1724/5 d.y.) and Shubael (1726).

Thomas Baxter (II) was born about 1683 and died (prob. Yarmouth) aft 15 Apr 1745.[3] Thomas married Wethersfield, CT 3 May 1705 Mary Lattimer and had two children. Thomas apparently deserted his wife and had four illegitimate children by Hannah Crowell born between 1710-1718. By his wife, Thomas had two children (Wethersfield, CT) Timothy (1705/6) and Elizabeth (1707/8). By Hannah Crowell he had four more children (recorded, buhht likely not born at Yarmouth): Thomas (1710), Cornelius (1712), Leah (1715) and Malachi (1718).

Shubael Baxter, Esq. was born in 1687 and died Yarmouth 12 Apr 1741 (aged 54 years). He married in Yarmouth (as her second husband) Elizabeth GORHAM Downs and they had three children (Yarmouth): Thankful (1711/2), Richard (1713) and Hannah (1720 d.y.).

Third Generation

John Baxter (II) was born Yarmouth 5 Jul 1714 and died aft 29 Apr 1762.[4] It is currently unknown whether he was ever married.

Joseph Baxter was born Yarmouth 3 Mar 1715/6 and died there 6 Jan 1797 (in his 82d year). He married Barnstable 15 Nov 1747 Hannah North and they had ten children (Yarmouth): Daniel (1748), Winifred (1750), Mary (1752), John (1754), Desire (1756), Sarah (1759), Hannah (1761), infant twins (1763-1763) and Joseph 1766.

Isaac Baxter was born Yarmouth 12 Jan 1717/8 and died (prob. in Yarmouth) bef 10 Jul 1779.[5] He married Yarmouth 1 Feb 1744/5 Abigail Taylor and they had five children (Yarmouth): David (1745/6), Isaac (1749), Deborah (1752), Martha (1755) and Taylor (1758).

Hezekiah Baxter was born Yarmouth 21 Mar 1719/20 and died (prob. Yarmouth) aft 1767.[6] He married twice, first Yarmouth 21 Apr 1743 Deborah Nickerson and second Yarmouth 4 Oct 1758 Thankful GAGE Marchant. By his first wife he had one child (Yarmouth): Samuel/Lemual (1745). By his second wife he had two more children (Yarmouth): Ebenezer (1761) and Hezekiah (1763).

Shubael Baxter was born Yarmouth 24 Dec 1726 and died there 6 Apr 1780. He married Barnstable 5 Mar 1746/7 Mehitable Hallett and they had nine children: Susannah (1748), Anne (1751), Rebecca (1755), Mehitable (1757), Temperance (1759), Shubael (1761), Lockwood Gorham (1764), Ezekiel (1767) and Elizabeth (1774).


Timothy Baxter was born Wethersfield, CT 26 Jan 1705/6 and died there 18 Apr 1777. He married Wethersfield 14 Jul 1726 Sarah Kilborn and they had six children (Wethersfield): John (1726), Honour (1728/9), Martha (1730), Elisha (1732), Sarah (1735) and Mehitable (1740).

Thomas Baxter (III) was born 19 Dec 1710 and died Yarmouth 1 Apr 1781. He married (int. Yarmouth 8 Nov 1740) Zilpha Nickerson of Chatham and they had six children (Yarmouth, now Dennis): Benjamin (1741), Reuben (1745), Stephen (1748), Ruth (1751), Thomas (1755) and Zilpha (1758).

Cornelius Baxter was born 30 Nov 1712 and died Yarmouth in Nov 1796. He married (int. Yarmouth 21 Feb 1746/7) Jemima Marchant and they had ten children (Yarmouth): Martha (1747), Jerusha (1749), Hannah (1752), Mary "Moley" (1754), Barnabas (1758), Cornelius (1760), Thankful (1763), Nathaniel (1765), David (1767) and Marcy (1772).

Malachi Baxter was born 30 Apr 1716 and died Yarmouth in 1755. He married Yarmouth 16 Mar 1738/9 Thankful O'Kelley and they had eight children (Yarmouth): Rebecca (1739-1742), David (1741), Hannah (1744), Abigail (1746), Malachi (1748), John (1750), Jedediah (1753) and Simeon.


(Capt.) Richard Baxter was born Yarmouth 6 Jul 1713 and died there bef 10 Nov 1783. He married twice, first Yarmouth 11 Apr 1734 Jane "Jeney" Baxter and second, Yarmouth 21 Oct 1775 "Mrs." Mary Coffin (no children). By his first wife, Richard had nine children (Yarmouth): Thankful (1734/5), Shubael (1736 d.y.), Hannah (1738), Richard (1742), Desire (1744), John (1745/6-1746/7), Prince (1748), Thomas (1750) and Jene (1756).

  3. His son called himself "Junr." as witness to will of Thankful Thacher.
  4. House burnt down in Tisbury

Previous Y-DNA testing

The Family Tree DNA Baxter DNA Project currently does not list any Y-DNA descendants of Capt. Thomas Baxter of Cape Cod.

Further needed testing

We need direct male-line descendants of this Baxter family to WGS/NGS test to discover where this family falls in the Y-DNA tree.
