Biography
First Generation
John Finney/Phinney was baptized at Lenton, Nottinghamshire, England on 15 Mar 1603/4, son of Robert Finney (son of Jeffrey/Geoffrey & Ellen). John died at Swansea 6 Jan 1686. He married three times, first Lenton 22 Nov 1636 to Christian Patten (and they emigrated to Plymouth Colony in 1637 or 1638); second Barnstable 10 Jun 1650 to Abigail (Bishop) Coggin; and third Barnstable 26 Jun 1654 to Elizabeth Bailey. He had three children (Margaret, John & Thomas [died young]) by his first wife and seven children (Jonathan, Robert, Hannah, Elizabeth, Josiah, Jeremiah & Joshua) by his third wife.
Second Generation
John Finney (II) was born in Plymouth 24 Dec 1638 and died in Eastham 19 Apr 1718. He married 10 Aug 1664 to Mary Rogers. They had twelve children: John, Melatiah, Joseph, Thomas, Ebenezer, Samuel, Mary, Mercy, Reliance, Benjamin, Jonathan & Hannah.
Jonathan Finney was born in Barnstable 14 Aug 1655 and died at Swansea in May 1728. He married Joanna Kinnicut and had six children: Robert, Hannah, Joanna, Elizabeth, Mary & Hannah.
Robert Finney was born in Barnstable 13 Aug 1656 and died at Plymouth 23 Jul 1690. As he was not mentioned in Torrey's New England Marriages Prior to 1700 it is believed he never married.
Josiah Finney was born in Barnstable 11 Jan 1660 and died at Plymouth bef 2 Jan 1726/7. He married twice, first Plymouth 19 Jan 1688 to Elizabeth Warren then to Mercy FORD Thomas. He had eight children, all by his first wife: Josiah (1687/8-1696), Elizabeth (1690), Robert (1692), Priscilla (1693/4), Josiah (1698 m Abigail Bryant, no known ch.), John (1701), Phebe (1704/5) and Joshua (1708).
Jeremiah Finney was born in Barnstable 15 Aug 1662 and died Bristol, RI 8 Feb 1748. He married Bristol, 7 Jan 1684 to Esther Lewis. They had eleven children: Jeremiah (died young), Mary, Hannah, Mehitable, John (died young), Rebecca, Esther, Deborah, John, Abigail and Jeremiah.
Joshua Finney was born in Barnstable 31 Jan 1665 and died in Swansea 7 Sep 1714. He married (intentions Bristol 31 May 1688) to Mercy Watts. They had eight children: Joshua, Elizabeth, Mary, John, Samuel, Josiah, Elizabeth and Mercy.
Third Generation
Robert Finney was born Plymouth 21 Oct 1693 and died there 1 Jun 1764. He married Plymouth 15 Nov 1716 Ann Morton and they had five children (born Plymouth): Lydia (d. 1718), Josiah (d. 1720), Rebecca (bp 1721), Elizabeth (bp 1724) and Jerusha (1728). In conclusion, there are no surviving Y-DNA lines from Robert.
John Finney was born Plymouth 13 Dec 1701 and died there 18 Mar 1791. He married twice, first Plymouth 22 Feb 1721 Sarah Bartlett (descendant of Francis Cooke & Richard Warren) and second Plympton 25 Apr 1739 Susanna DOTY Pratt (descendant of Francis Cooke, Edward Doty & Stephen Hopkins). By his first wife John had five children (born Plymouth): Sarah (1722), Phebe (1724/5), Josiah (1726/7-1727), Ruth (1728) and John (1730). By his second wife John had six more children (born Plymouth): Josiah (1739/40), Robert (1741), Ezra (1743), Silvanus (1745/6), Ephraim (1748) and William (1750).
Joshua Finney was born Plymouth 30 Jul 1708 and died there bef 22 May 1745. He married Plymouth 28 Sep 1727 Hannah Curtis and they had four children (born Plymouth): Joshua (bp 1736 unk if marr), Josiah (bp 1736), Nathaniel (bp 1736) and Elkanah (bp 1739 unk if marr).

Current test results
The Finney surname DNA Project Group: 3 - (English) R1b1a2 (Western Atlantic Modal) Jeffrey/Mother Finney - Nottinghamshire & MA has one individual stating their Most Distant Known Paternal Ancestor (MDKPA) was John Phinney b. 1603. No one in this group has SNP tested, but plugging in the 111 Y-STR values for the John Phinney descendant into the Nevgen Haplogroup Prediction tool gives a prediction of: R1b L21>DF13>Z39589>DF41>MC21 with a probability of 100%.
