The most common DNA tests marketed today are autosomal DNA tests. These tests are offered by a variety of companies including AncestryDNA, 23andMe, Family Tree DNA and others. These tests are good at identifying close DNA relatives (generally speaking up to around fourth and fifth cousins), but due to the nature of DNA inheritance, they generally can only be used to go back as far as the time period of Revolutionary War soldiers for the "baby boomer" generation.

While some of these tests give Y-DNA and mtDNA Haplogroups, these assignments are typically quite ancient. A Y-DNA or mtDNA test would give much more precise haplogroup assignments.
