Biography

First Generation

(Dea.) John Done[1] (later Doane) was born England abt 1590[2] date, place and parentage currently unknown. He died Eastham 21 Feb 1685[/6]. He married twice, first Ann ____ then by 1 Apr 1659 Lydia ____ (no ch.) By his first wife he had five children: Lydia (c1625), Abigail (c1631), John (c1635), Daniel (c1637) and Ephraim (c1642).

Second Generation

John Doane (II) was born Plymouth abt 1635 and died Eastham 15 Mar 1707/8. He married twice, first Eastham 30 Apr 1662 Hannah Bangs then Eastham 14 Apr 1684 Rebecca Pettee (no ch.) By his first wife he had eight children (Eastham): John (1662/3-1663), John (1664), Ann (1666), Rebecca (1668), Hannah (1669), Isaac (1670), Samuel (1673) and David (c1675).

(Dea.) Daniel Doane was born Plymouth abt 1637 and died Eastham bef 26 Sep 1712.[3] He married twice, first abt 1665 Constance ____[4] then Eastham aft 28 Jun 1682 Hepzibah COLE Crisp (widow of George Crisp). By his first wife he had eight children (Eastham): Daniel (1666), Constant (son 1669), Joseph (1669), Constance (1670/1), Israel (son c1672), Rebecca (c1672), Nathaniel (1680) and Abigail (c1682). By his second wife he had two more children (Eastham): Hepzibah (1683) and Ruth (c1690).

Ephraim Doane was born Plymouth abt 1642 and died Eastham abt 19 Apr 1700. He married twice, first 5 Feb 1667/8 Mercy Knowles, then Eastham aft 20 Apr 1692 Mary SMALLEY Snow (widow of John Snow) (no ch.) By his first wife he had eight children (Eastham): Patience (1668-1675), Apphia (1670), Hezekiah (1672), Thomas (1674), Ebenezer (1676), Nehemiah (1680-1684), Patience (1682) and Ruhamah (1685).

Third Generation

John Doane (Esq.) was born Eastham 29 May 1664 and died Boston (Long Wharf) 22 Nov 1755. He married thrice, first 3 Jun 1686 Mehitable Scudder, then bef 1696 Hannah Hobart and finally Hull 20 Jul 1732 Jane Collier. By his first wife he had only one child (Eastham-Billingsgate, now Wellfleet): John (1687). By his second wife he had two children (Boston): Joshua (1696) and Solomon (1698). By his last wife he is said to have had five children: John (1734), Hannah (1737), Jane (1738-1739), Jane (1743) and Ann (1744).

Isaac Doane was born Eastham 2 Jun 1670 and died there 29 Dec 1755. He married Eastham (prob. now Orleans) 2 Dec 1700 Margaret Atwood and they had six children (Eastham): Isaac (1700), Hannah (1702/3), Jerusha (1704/5), Huldah (c1706), Margaret (1711) and Anne (1715).

Samuel Doane was born Eastham 21 Mar 1672/3 and died there 15 Aug 1756. He married Eastham 3 Dec 1696 Martha Hamlin and they had eight children: Samuel (1697), Sarah (1699), Dinah (1700), Dorcas (1703), Solomon (1705), Simeon (1708), Martha (c1712) and Keturah (c1715).

(Dr.) David Doane was born Eastham abt 1675 and died there 18 Nov 1748. He married twice, first Eastham 30 Sep 1701 Dorothy Horton then Eastham 9 Jan 1738 Sarah Rich (no ch.) By his first wife he had eleven children (Eastham): Jonathan (1702), Hannah (1704), Keziah (1706), David (1708), John (1708), Nathan (1710), Abigail (1711), Eleazer (c1712), Joshua (1714), Rachel (c1716) and Enoch (c1718).


Daniel Doane (II) was born Eastham 8 Mar 1666 and died Newton, PA 1 Nov 1743. He married twice, first Eastham abt Jul 1687 Mehitable Twining, then Middletown PA abt 1720 Mary Hancock. By his first wife he had nine children: Daniel (1688 m Ann Elizabeth Baynes), Sarah (c1690), Lydia (1690), Eleazer (1691 m Susanna ____ & Rebecca Davis), Elijah (1694 m Catherine ____), Joseph (1697 m Mary Carter), Israel (1699 m Esther Dillon), Elizabeth (1701) and Rebecca (c1703). By his second wife he had four more children: Samuel (1722 unk. if marr.), Mary (c1724), Thomas (1726 unk. if marr.) and Ebenezer (c1728 unk. if marr.)

Constand Doane likely a "phantom" and never existed, said to have been born Eastham 7 Mar 1669 and died Eastham 2 May 1720. No record of marriage.

[Joseph Doane was born Eastham 27 Jun 1669 and died there 27 Jul 1757. He married twice, first Eastham 8 Jan 1690/1 Mary Godfrey then 29 Feb 1727/8 Desire Berry. By his first wife he had eleven children (Eastham): Mary (1691), Joseph (1693 m Deborah Paddock), Rebecca (1698), Hannah (1700), Daniel (1703 m Ruth Cole), Phebe (1704), Elisha (1706/7 m Elizabeth Sparrow), Joshua (1709 m Mary Freeman), Lydia (1715), Elizabeth (1717) and Sarah (1719). By his second wife he had one more child: Desire (1728).

Israel Doane was born Eastham abt 1672 and died aft 1740. He married twice, first Eastham 1701 Ruth Freeman then 19 Apr 1729 Mercy Cobb (no ch.) By his first wife he had Israel (1701 unk. if marr.), Prince (1704 m Elizabeth Godfrey), Abigail (1706), Elnathan (1709 m Martha Paddock), Daniel (1714 unk. if marr.) and Edmund (1718 m Elizabeth Osborn)

Nathaniel Doane was born Eastham abt 1680 and died Harwich bef 5 Jul 1757. He married Mary ____ and they had six children: Hannah, Ann (1706), Elijah (c1710 m Susannah Lewis), Mary (c1712), Mercy (c1715) and Abigail (b1720).


Hezekiah Doane was born Eastham 16 Aug 1672 and died there abt May 1752. He married thrice, first Eastham abt 1691 Hannah Snow, then Eastham abt Mar 1717 Mary SMITH, widow of Thomas Freeman, finally Eastham 24 Mar 1744 Sarah ELKINS, widow of Edward Knowles (no ch.) By his first wife he had nine children: Nehemiah (1692 m Jane Ela), Mary (1694), Ephraim (1696 m Mary Atkins), Lydia (1698), Elisha (c1699 m Hannah Cole), Rachel (1701), Apphia (c1702), Hannah (1703) and Hezekiah (1712 m Thankful Bickford). By his second wife he had two more children: Joseph (1719 d.y.) and Joseph (c1721 m Mary Mayo).

Thomas Doane was born Eastham 4 Sep 1674 and died Chatham 8 May 1756. He married Eastham 28 Feb 1700/1 Patience Mulford and they had seven children: Thomas (1702 m Sarah Barnes), Elizabeth (1704), Reuben (1706 m Sarah Haugh), Abigail (1708), Benjamin (1710 m Mary Freeman), Ruhamah (1714) and Anna (1715).

Ebenezer Doane was born Eastham Apr 1676 and died Truro aft 1725. He married Lydia ____ and they had eight children (Truro): Ebenezer (1706 m Elizabeth Skillings), Thankful (1707/8), James (1709 m Mary ____), Keziah (1712), Levi (1714 unk. if marr.), Lydia (c1716), Elizabeth (c1719) and Mary (1724).

  1. Virtually all of the early references to this individual spell his surname Done. It is only with his male line descendants that the surname morphed into Doane.
  2. Called himself aged "eighty and eight years or there about" in his will dated 18 May 1678.
  3. While his gravestone states he died 20 Sep 1712, the inventory of his estate was taken on 26 Sep 1712 and his will was presented to probate on 7 Oct 1712.
  4. She was NOT Constance Snow.

The Doane DNA Project Group: "I2a2b-L39 Plymouth, MA" contains a significant number of individuals. The project currently does not list the Most Distant Known Patrilineal Ancestor (MDKPA) but it is believed most members of this group are patrilineal descendants of (Dea.) John Done.
